Polite suspect held by off duty detective
A polite burglar caught rummaging through a backyard shed was detained Wednesday by a homeowner and his neighbor, an off-duty detective with the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office.
The homeowner heard his dog barking about 8:40 in the morning and checked out his backyard in the 8600 block of North Whitehouse. He saw two cloth bags full of items outside his shed and found a man standing in the shed, according to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office. The homeowner’s son ran next door to get the off-duty detective to assist.
The burglar did not try to run and even handed over his identification when asked, police said.
The responding Sheriff’s deputy found an expensive road bike next to a fence that had been stolen nearby. The man was also allegedly in possession of a stolen debit card.
Bart Bonebright, 27, has been arrested on six felony burglary charges, possession of stolen property, theft and criminal trespass. He is reportedly a suspect in other burglaries and additional charges are expected, police said.
Bonebright was released from jail on his own recognizance without bail after a brief court appearance today.
