Girls basketball: Jordan Phelan’s big game powers East Valley win
Jordan Phelan scored 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds and East Valley opened its season with a 56-40 nonleague win over Timberlake Tuesday night at East Valley.
Hannah Burland added 12 points and Elle Burland chipped in 10 for the Knights.
East Valley surged ahead after halftime, outscoring the Tigers 22-3 in the third to take a 24-point lead into the fourth. Allison Kirby posted a team-high 15 points for Timberlake.
Lakeland 60, Cheney 33: Tauna Kirk and Kaidan Kelsey scored 13 points apiece as the Hawks grabbed control from the get-go and eased past the host Blackhawks. Emily Vanderhoof and Faith Bodak each added 10 points for Lakeland, which led 31-14 at the half. Kendyl Cone scored 10 for Cheney.
St. George’s 52, Colville 23: Hailey Higashi scored 27 points and Ceci Bergquist added 19 as the Dragons, last year’s State 2B third-place team, got out to a hot start and dumped the host Indians. Colville couldn’t recover after falling behind 15-3 in the first quarter. Megan Lee tallied a team-high eight points for Colville.
Bonners Ferry 61, Coeur d’Alene Charter 30: Jasmine Hill had 18 points and five assists and Savannah Woods added 15 points and eight rebounds and the Badgers routed the visiting Panthers. Anna Verhaeghe led Coeur d’Alene Charter with eight points.
Springdale 53, Chewelah 46: Emily Sulgrove had 14 points and 10 rebounds and Eilish Smith added 14 points and eight boards as the Chargers clipped the visiting Cougars. Kristyn Koler led Chewelah with nine points.
Inchelium 46, Northport 26: Randi Finley scored 11 points and Maraia Zacherle added 10 as the Hornets defeated the visiting Mustangs. Joelle Boyd and Khaila Swan each added eight for Inchelium. Northport’s Ashtyn Baribault led all scorers with 13 points, but the Mustangs couldn’t climb out of an 11-point first-half deficit.
Tekoa-Oakesdale 51, St. John-Endicott 27: Kimberly Groom made 8 of 9 free throws and finished with 16 points as the Timberwolves topped the Eagles in St. John. Olivia Pakootas added 14 points for Tekoa-Rosalia, which held a 46-31 rebounding advantage.
Dayton 43, Garfield-Palouse 29: Lexi Ramirez scored 10 points and the Bulldogs topped the visiting Vikings. Payson Griner and Keely Burnes combined for 22 points for Gar-Pal.
