Axtell’s late 3s help Riverside remain perfect
Tyler Axtell hit two late 3-pointers and Riverside kept its perfect record intact with a 52-43 win over Medical Lake in a Northeast A League opener Tuesday night in Medical Lake.
The Cardinals (1-5, 0-1) came within two points before Axtell’s 3-pointers gave Riverside a comfortable cushion. Axtell finished with 19 points. And Andrew Kramer and Dalton Rausch each added 10 for the Rams (5-0, 1-0).
Medical Lake’s Tellas Johnson led all scorers with 24 points.
Lakeside 68, Newport 31: Ryan Quigley scored 14 points and hauled in nine rebounds as the Eagles (3-1, 1-0) cruised past the Grizzlies (3-2, 0-1) in Nine Mile Falls.
Lakeside dominated the boards, outrebounding Newport 51-21.
Jonathan Lyon hit four 3-pointers and scored a team-high 12 points for Newport.
Northeast 2B
Lind-Ritzville/Sprague 59, Springdale 50: The Broncos (2-0, 1-0) made 12 of 16 free throws in the second half to surge from behind and beat the host Chargers (0-7, 0-2).
Lind-Ritzville/Sprague’s Connor O’Neill led all scorers with 17 points.
The Broncos trailed 34-23 at halftime, but outscored Springdale 36-16 in the third and fourth quarters. John Lynch scored 15 points for the Chargers.
Liberty 63, Davenport 50: Match Burnham had 21 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and four steals as the Lancers (6-1, 2-1) topped the visiting Gorillas (3-3, 0-2).
Ryan Thayer pitched in 15 points for Liberty. Davenport got 15 points from Max Mielke.
Northeast 1B North
Curlew 49, Republic 43: Daniel Tresham scored 16 points and pulled down eight rebounds as the Cougars (5-0, 3-0) shook off a slow start and beat the visiting Tigers (2-2, 1-2).
Curlew went scoreless through the first 5 minutes, then turned it on.
Coby Grumbach added 14 points for the Cougars and Gunnar Brown added 12.
Alex Rivera had 10 points and nine rebounds for Republic.
Cusick 64, Selkirk 42: Alec Bluff scored 27 points and pulled down 16 rebounds to guide the Panthers (4-1, 2-0) past the visiting Rangers (1-4, 1-2).
Mickey Andrews added 16 points for Cusick, and the Panthers collected 19 offensive rebounds.
Dominic Cain and Cole Dawson both scored 11 for Selkirk.
Inchelium 64, Northport 48: The Hornets (1-2, 1-1) surged late and beat the host Mustangs (0-7, 0-3).
Northport pulled within three points with 2 minutes left, but a flurry of buckets put Inchelium ahead.
Patrick Lamb led all scorers with 18 points for Northport.
Nonleague
Lakeland 67, East Valley 61: Derek Bayley and Tyrel Derrick combined for 21 points in the decisive second quarter as the Hawks (4-2) held on in the second half and beat the host Knights (2-2).
Bayley finished with a game-high 23 points and went 6 of 9 from the 3-point line. Derrick dropped 22 points.
J.T. Phelan led the Knights with 19 points, 13 rebounds, five assists, and four blocks.
Lakeland outscored East Valley 26-14 in the second quarter after falling behind by five points in the first.
Post Falls 63, Hanford 51: Joey Pfennigs made all six of his shots and finished with 13 points, eight rebounds and four steals as the Trojans (3-3) beat the visiting Falcons.
Corey Koski added 15 points and 12 rebounds for Post Falls.
Hanford was led by Kendall Watson’s 15 points.
Deer Park 58, Freeman 39: Nate Guske erupted for 26 points as the Stags (4-2) heated up in the second quarter and beat the visiting Scotties (1-1).
Deer Park outscored Freeman 20-12 in the second quarter to go ahead by eight points at the half.
The Scotties made a late rush in the fourth quarter but got into foul trouble and Deer Park sank 15 of 21 free throws to cement the victory.
Garfield-Palouse 61, Valley Christian 46: Bo Piersol recorded a double-double for the Vikings with 10 points and 14 rebounds and Nick Cox scored 17 as Garfield-Palouse (5-0) beat the host Panthers (2-3).
Valley Christian’s Matthew Holbrook scored a game-high 20 points.
Wilbur-Creston 65, Bridgeport 47: Dorian Jaeger scored 21 points to guide the Wildcats (3-2) past the visiting Mustangs.
Nick Densley added 14 points and Joe Rosman pulled in 14 rebounds for Wilbur-Creston.
Asotin 69, Tekoa-Oakesdale 25: Dayton Krull scored 15 points and Dirk Whitmore pitched in with 11 as the Panthers overwhelmed the visiting Nighthawks (0-3).
Cooper Angelo scored seven points for Tekoa-Oakesdale.
