Women’s basketball: Late basket carries Eagles

Senior Aubrey Ashenfelter capped a stellar performance with a game-winning jumper with 2 seconds left and Eastern Washington topped Idaho 85-84 in a nonconference game Saturday at Reese Court in Cheney.

Idaho’s Christina Salvatore missed a desperation jumper as time expired.

Ashenfelter tied her career high with 20 points and added a game-high 10 assists and seven rebounds. EWU senior Laura Hughes added 17 points in 26 minutes off the bench. She made 7 of 9 shots and added five rebounds and three blocks.

The Eagles’ Lexie Nelson had 16 points, tying her career high with four 3-pointers, and Hayley Hodgins chipped in with 14 points and five rebounds.

The Vandals (7-5) were led by Alyssa Charlston, who scored a career-high 32 points. Stacey Barr added 19 for Idaho.

The Eagles outshot the Vandals 52.4 percent to 47 percent, including a 48 percent to 36.8 advantage from 3-point range.

Eastern Washington (2-5) hosts Northwest on Tuesday. Idaho hosts Wyoming next Saturday.

Whitworth 77, Corban 48: Kendra Lahue led three players in double figures with 21 points and pulled down nine rebounds as the Pirates (4-3) built a commanding first-half lead and eased past the Warriors (5-7) at the Kim Evanger Rainey Classic at the Sherwood Center in Walla Walla, Wash.

K.C. McConnell added 15 points and Kayla Johnson chipped in 12 points and eight boards for Whitworth.

The Pirates raced out to a 39-18 first-half lead to take control. Tara Vanweerdhuizen tallied a team-high 11 points for Corban.

Whitworth forced 19 turnovers, which it turned into 19 points.

The Pirates take on Warner Pacific in Portland, Ore., on Tuesday.
