UI basketball adds Dean to roster

Basketball: Glen Dean, a graduate transfer who played two years at Eastern Washington and last season at Utah, has joined the Idaho men’s basketball program and will be eligble to play this season. Dean, a Seattle native, graduated at Utah and was able to transfer to Idaho and immediately play under NCAA rules. His brother, Perrion Callandret, was part of Idaho’s earlier announced recruiting class and will be a freshman this fall.

In addition to the family connection, Dean’s former coach at Eastern, Kirk Earlywine, is on the Vandals’ staff.

Idaho also announced the addition of walk-on Chad Sherwood, a guard from West Albany High in Oregon.

Chiefs drop puck on preseason

Hockey: The Spokane Chiefs will open their preseason schedule today against the team that ended their 2012-13 season.

The Chiefs will meet defending Western Hockey League champion Portland at 3 p.m. in the Everett Silvertips Holiday Inn Preseason Classic. Portland swept the Chiefs 4-0 in a second-round playoff series in April.

The Chiefs will also meet the host Silvertips at 7 p.m. Saturday and Seattle at 3 p.m. Sunday during the tournament.

On Thursday, the Chiefs announced that their 2013 preseason roster had been trimmed to 36 players.

Few’s CvC event raises $742,009

Mark and Marcy Few’s Coaches vs. Cancer event last weekend raised $742,009 for the American Cancer Society and other local cancer-fighting organizations. Of that total, $238,000 will be dedicated to a cost-free summer camp for children with cancer in the Inland Northwest.

The event has raised more than $6.7 million in 12 years.

Area courses host Patriot Golf Day

Thirteen area courses will participate in Patriot Golf Day over the Labor Day weekend.

Donations made at each course today through Monday will go to the Folds of Honor Foundation, which provides post-secondary educational scholarships to children and spouses of military service men and women killed or disabled while serving.

Golfers are encouraged to donate at least $1 per round. Patriot Golf Day has raised more than $17.1 million in the last six years.

Local courses involved are Esmeralda, The Links, Qualchan, Coeur d’Alene Resort, Coeur d’Alene Public, Manito, Sun Dance, Avondale, The Fairways, StoneRidge, Liberty Lake, Downriver and Hayden Lake.
