Service for Paton at SP Saturday

A memorial service for Jim Paton is scheduled Saturday at  1 p.m. at Shadle Park High School.

Paton, a Shadle graduate, died at age 68 from complications of Parkinson’s Disease on New Year’s day.

He lettered three years between 1962-64 at Washington State as an offensive and defensive lineman, and touched the lives of numerous youngsters as a teacher and coach at Shadle Park and Rogers.

“His last request was to have a memorial in the Shadle auditorium,” said former Paton player and Highlanders baseball coach Ron Brooks, “and wanted the bagpipers to play.”

Four slated to join Cougars

College football: Washington State announced the signing of three players on Monday: kicker Michael Bowlin to a national letter of intent, and offensive lineman Denzell Dotson and running back Teondray Caldwell to financial aid agreements.

Also, receiver Rahmel Dockery, a 2011 signee deemed ineligible last season by the NCAA, enrolled and began classes Monday.

Dockery, 5-foot-10, 170 pounds from Curtis of Tacoma, was considered one of the best players in the state as a senior in 2010.

Bowlin spent two years at Saddleback College in California after transferring from Oregon. Dotson, from Peoria, Ariz., (6-foot-3, 305) graduated in December in order to participate in spring practices in April.

Caldwell is a former Nevada signee who rushed for 1,085 yards and 19 touchdowns in eight games as a senior in Venice, Calif., in 2010.

GU women join men in rankings

College basketball: A nine-game win streak and two WCC road wins helped the Gonzaga women enter the Associated Press Top 25 for the first time this season. The Bulldogs (14-2, 3-0 WCC) were No. 23 Monday after receiving 106 votes.
