Gonzaga baseball opens with win over Nebraska

Gonzaga scored three runs in the eighth inning Friday and beat Nebraska 7-4 in both teams’ season openers in Peoria, Ariz.

Eric Lanes’ RBI single in the eighth proved to be the winning hit for the Bulldogs.

Derek Peterson earned the win after throwing two shutout innings. Zach Abbruzza earned the save by pitching a scoreless eight and ninth.

GU and the Huskers will play the middle game of the series at 6 tonight.

• Mississippi State scored three runs in the second and went on to beat Washington State 6-2 in a nonconference season opener in Starkville, Miss.

Taylor Ard and Jason Monda had RBI hits for the Cougars (0-1).

WSU plays the Bulldogs (1-0) again today.

Softball

The Whitworth Pirates split their season-opening doubleheader with College of Idaho and Concordia at the Northwest Cup in Clackamas, Ore.

Nikki Shumway hit a walk-off solo home run in the opener to lift College of Idaho to a 2-1 win.

Sami Parr had a double and a solo homer as Whitworth won the nightcap 11-9 over Concordia.
