Free throw gives Montana victory over Hornets

Will Cherry sank a free throw with 2 seconds left in the game, enabling Montana to escape with a 61-60 Big Sky Conference road basketball victory over Sacramento State on Friday night at Sacramento, Calif.

Montana (6-4, 2-0) was able to overcome a rally by Sacramento State (6-4, 1-1) in the final 19 seconds.

Sacramento State’s Cody Demps hit a 3-pointer with 19 seconds left to cut Montana’s lead to 60-57. Another 3-pointer, by Dylan Garrity, tied it at 60 with 7 seconds remaining.

Cherry made 1 of 2 foul shots and time ran out.

Mathias Ward scored 16 points to lead Montana. Kareem Jamar scored 11 and Cherry 10.

John Dickson scored 15 for Sacramento State.

Northern Colorado 75, North Dakota 66: Derrick Barden had 20 points on 9-of-10 shooting, Tevin Svihovec added 19 points and the Bears (3-6, 1-0) went on to beat North Dakota (2-8, 0-2) at Grand Forks, N.D.
