Gonzaga unveils nonconference basketball schedule

Home games against West Virginia, Illinois and Baylor highlight Gonzaga’s nonconference men’s basketball schedule for 2012-13, unveiled Tuesday by the school.

Gonzaga also has tough road games against Washington State, Oklahoma State, Butler, and the 10th annual Battle in Seattle against Kansas State.

“For the fans in Spokane to come watch Illinois play, to watch Baylor – which will probably be a top-10 team and has some amazing talent – is something pretty special,” Zags coach Mark Few said.

Football

Dominique Blackman completed 16 of 21 passes for 181 yards and four touchdowns as Idaho’s offensive dominated the day during the Vandals’ first fall scrimmage.

Freshman Chad Chalich (Coeur d’Alene) completed 4 of 5 passes for 88 yards.

• Kenny Spencer of the Spokane Shock was named the Arena Football League’s kicker of the year. Spencer set an AFL single-season record with 138 extra-point kicks.

Golf

Brett Manke of Lakewood, Wash., finished at 2-under-par 142 to capture the stroke-play championship at the 58th Pacific Northwest Junior Boys Amateur Championship at Port Ludlow (Wash.) Golf Club.

Derek Bayley of Rathdrum and Tanner Comes of Spokane tied for 10th at 146

Mixed martial arts

Joel Thomas (West Valley High) and Clinton Teeples (Newport) will be the main event when Northern Quest Resort & Casino holds an outdoors edition of Conquest of the Cage on Aug. 19.

Women’s soccer

West Coast Conference coaches have selected Gonzaga to finish in ninth and last place in their preseason poll. The Bulldogs received 10 points. Santa Clara is the top choice, with seven first-place votes and 63 points.
