WVHS musicians honored
Students from the instrumental music program at West Valley High School recently attended the 2011 Heritage Music Festival in Vancouver, B.C.
The wind ensemble earned a silver medal, percussion ensemble, a gold medal; the color guard earned a gold medal and the marching band earned a gold medal.
Student Eric Heale was given the Outstanding Musician Award, selected by a panel of judges, and the West Valley High School Band program received the Outstanding Band Program award.
The band director is Jim Loucks.
Spokane Youth Environmental Awards
The 14th Annual Spokane Youth Environmental Awards were held May 24 at Spokane Community College. More than 170 middle school and high school students exhibited environmental science projects. Each student chose a topic to explore.
Superior awards given to Greater Spokane Valley students: Kathryn Butler and Christopher Hatten, eighth grade, Centennial Middle School; William Fisher, seventh grade, Centennial Middle School; Rachel Fricke and Bethany Williams, eighth grade, Freeman Middle School. Ninth graders from Central Valley High School: Holly Miller, Merissa Wellington, DG Kim, Karl Ellingson, Courtney Owens, Haley Feider, Clerie Calvo, Lucy Jones, Molly Barnhart, Alyssa Peck, Shelby Pace, Jessie Kunz-Pfeiffer, Philip Howard, Hailee Herbst, Courtney Petrini, Madie Laws, Carlin Coulson, Katy Dolan, Sammy Nania, Jaclyn Urbanec, Anusha Gollapalli and Melissa Morgan; and CV seniors: Ivvie Shellhorn, Penny Zhang, Mathew Summers, Alex Slate and John Weiser.
Open house
The Central Valley School District will host a community open house to honor former school board member Anne Long Thursday from 8 to 10 a.m. at Liberty Lake Elementary School, 23606 E. Boone Ave.
The event will feature a presentation by the school board at 8:45 a.m.
Long resigned from the board last month after serving almost 10 years.
Coffee and light refreshments will be served.

Mountain View Community Day
Mountain View Middle School, 6011 N. Chase Road, will present Community Day Thursday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The school, part of the East Valley School District, is closing at the end of the year.
There will be activities throughout the morning including an assembly, signing of a gym wall and a picnic lunch. The staff and students will honor the history of the school which has been serving middle school students since 1979.

The East Valley School District will hold a public hearing on the closure of Mountain View Middle School Tuesday during its board meeting in the district office, 12325 E. Grace Ave., at 6 p.m.
