In brief: Williams moves on to Rogers final

Tennis: Serena Williams advanced to the final in the Rogers Cup, beating fourth-seeded Victoria Azarenka of Belarus 6-3, 6-3 in Toronto on Saturday night.
Williams, playing just her fourth tournament since being sidelined for a year by injuries and illness, will face 10th-seeded Samantha Stosur of Australia in the final.
Stosur beat Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska 6-2, 5-7, 6-2.
• Fish, Djokovic advance to Rogers Cup final: In Montreal, sixth-seeded Mardy Fish advanced to his third straight ATP Tour final, beating unseeded Janko Tipsarevic 6-3, 6-4 in the Rogers Cup.
In the second semifinal, top-seeded Novak Djokovic defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-4, 3-0 (retired).
Defending champ Kang makes final
Golf: In Barrington, R.I., defending champion Danielle Kang and Thailand’s Moriya Jutanugarn advanced to the U.S. Women’s Amateur final at Rhode Island Country Club.
Kang, the 18-year-old Pepperdine star from Westlake Village, Calif., beat University of Alabama player Brooke Pancake, from Chattanooga, Tenn., 1-up.
The 17-year-old Jutanugarn edged LSU’s Austin Ernst, the NCAA champion from Seneca, S.C., 1-up.
Kang is trying to become the first player to win two years in a row since Kelli Kuehne in 1995-96.
The 36-hole final is today.
Catchings scores 5,000th point
Basketball: In Indianapolis, Tamika Catchings tied a career high with 32 points, surpassing 5,000 for her career, and the Indiana Fever beat the New York Liberty 82-71.
Catchings became the sixth WNBA player to reach 5,000 points when she made a jumper from near the free-throw line late in the first quarter. Catchings also set a franchise record by making 17 free throws. She became the league’s career leader in steals earlier this season.
• Thunder’s Perkins arrested in Texas at night club: Authorities have charged Oklahoma City Thunder forward Kendrick Perkins with misdemeanor disorderly conduct and public intoxication after an altercation in South Texas.
A statement from police in Beaumont, Texas, said officers saw a large crowd outside The Ticket night club just after 2 a.m., and received complaints of fights and pepper spray inside.
An officer saw about 50 people inside around Perkins, who police said was attempting to fight the club’s manager. The statement said the crowd pushed Perkins out the back door of the club, where he continued to yell obscenities and start other fights.
Perkins was arrested and taken to Jefferson County jail. According to KFDM-TV, which first reported the incident, he was released after posting $150 bond. The misdemeanor charges are punishable by fines.
Billings headed to LL World Series
Miscellany: In San Bernardino, Calif., Cole McKenzie hit a grand slam in a six-run fourth inning and Billings Big Sky became the first Montana team to advance to the Little League Baseball World Series, beating Bend, Ore., South 7-1 in the Northwest Region final.
Billings earned its spot in the championship game with a 6-2 victory over Lewiston, Idaho.
Billings will open World Series play Thursday in South Williamsport, Pa., against the Midwest champion.
• Flames sign Hannan to one-year contract: The Calgary Flames signed defenseman Scott Hannan to a one-year, $1 million contract. Hannan, a native of British Columbia, split last NHL season between the Colorado Avalanche and Washington Capitals.
• Istanbul to bid for 2020 Olympic Games: Turkey’s prime minister says Istanbul will make a bid to host the 2020 Summer Olympic Games.
It is Istanbul’s fifth attempt to host the games, after failed bids in 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2012.
• Mares wins boxing title: Abner Mares won the IBF bantamweight championship Saturday night, beating Joseph Agbeko by a controversial majority decision at Las Vegas.
Mares appeared to land a number of illegal low blows, but referee Russell Mora never deducted a point in the Showtime bantamweight tournament final. In the 11th round, Agbeko was sent to the canvas on an apparent low blow that Mora immediately ruled a knockdown.
Two judges scored the bout 115-111 for Mares, while the other had it even at 113.
• Wells wins Leadville: In Leadville, Colo., Todd Wells, the national cross-country mountain bike champion, won the Race Across the Sky, the nation’s highest-altitude endurance test, with the second-fastest time in the race’s history.
Wells, from Durango, traversed the grueling, 100-mile course in a lung-searing 6 hours, 23 minutes, 38 seconds. That was about 7 minutes slower than Levi Leipheimer’s record-setting time of a year ago but well ahead of everyone else.
• Ipsen wins diving titles: In Los Angeles, Kristian Ipsen rallied to win the 3-meter springboard title at the U.S. diving championships, doing the toughest final three dives among the top contenders.
• Cape Blanco wins Arlington Million: Irish-bred Cape Blanco won the Arlington Million, surging to the lead at the head of the stretch to beat 2009 champion Gio Ponti by 2 1/2 lengths at Arlington Heights, Ill.
Dean’s Kitten finished third in the 10-horse field.
