Big Sky roundup: NAU throttles Montana State

Michael Herrick threw for 281 yards and three touchdowns and Northern Arizona beat Montana State 34-7 Saturday in Flagstaff, Ariz.

The Lumberjacks scored 28 points while keeping Montana State scoreless in the first half.

Herrick connected with Daiveun Curry-Chapman for two touchdown passes.

Curry-Chapman finished with eight catches for 69 yards.

Herrick also threw a scoring pass to Austin Shanks. Zach Bauman ran for a touchdown for NAU.

Cody Dowd scored on 28-yard fumble return in fourth quarter to cap the scoring for the Lumberjacks.

Montana State’s lone touchdown came on a pass from Denarius McGhee to Kyle Begger.

Northern Arizona finished with 404 yards of total offense to the Bobcats’ 123 yards.

Montana 23, Portland State 21: Three fourth-quarter field goals by Brody McKnight, including a 25-yarder with no time left, lifted the Grizzlies to a victory over the Vikings in Portland.

Montana marched 54 yards in 10 plays for the winning field goal. McKnight also booted the ball through the uprights from 25 and 30 yards earlier in the final quarter.

The Vikings, who overcame four lost fumbles to take a late fourth-quarter lead, lost to Montana for the sixth straight time.

Portland State took a 21-20 lead after a 97-yard scoring drive, capped by Cory McCaffrey’s leap into the end zone from 1 yard out with 2:34 remaining.

Chase Reynolds rushed for 107 yards on 23 carries for the Grizzlies.

Quarterback Connor Kavanaugh led Portland State’s rushers with 131 yards and a TD on 15 carries.

McCaffrey had 109 yards on 24 attempts.

Weber State 16, Idaho State 13: Cameron Higgins threw for 200 yards and rushed for a touchdown to lead the Wildcats past the Bengals in Pocatello.

Vai Tafuna scored the winning touchdown on a 3-yard run with 13:23 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Higgins was 16 for 31 with three interceptions for the Wildcats (3-3, 2-2 Big Sky), and Joe Collins caught five passes for 88 yards.

Brendon Garcia missed three field goals in the fourth quarter for Idaho State, including a 55-yard attempt that sailed wide left as time expired.

Russel Hill went 14 for 27 for 195 yards with an interception and was sacked six times for the Bengals, while Tavoy Moore rushed for 63 yards on 17 carries.

Dustin Tew intercepted a Higgins pass and returned it 100 yards in the second quarter for Idaho State’s only touchdown of the game.
