EWU field to be named for Roos

Football: Eastern Washington University new red synthetic turf field will be named for Michael and Katherine Roos, who donated $500,000 to the project.

Eastern made the announcement following naming approval by the Board of Trustees that is contingent upon project completion. The project is expected to begin this summer after the completion of a fundraising effort for the project.

The Board of Trustees commended the Roos family’s philanthropic efforts on behalf of Eastern and the community through the Michael Roos Foundation. A former Eagles student-athlete, Roos is a starting left offensive tackle for the Tennessee Titans in the National Football League.

A plaque commemorating the 73 years Eastern’s football stadium has been named Woodward Field will be placed at the stadium.

The stadium was named for Arthur C. Woodward, who was Eastern’s head football coach in 1927 and 1928. He was head of the department of physical education and health from 1927 to 1950.

M’s have new plan for Bedard

Baseball: The Mariners are tempering their optimistic hopes for Erik Bedard’s return.

Seattle manager Don Wakamatsu on Thursday described a plan for Bedard that suggests his season debut following shoulder surgery may not come until late June.

Bedard had a setback last week when he felt discomfort while throwing 30 pitches in a simulated game.

The left-hander will play catch Saturday. The team is looking at then sending him to their spring training facility in Arizona to throw at least two bullpen sessions and two simulated games before he’d start a rehab assignment.

Favre: Return still in ballpark

Football: Brett Favre says he still isn’t sure what he’s doing next season, but he may have given some indication after visiting with the Southern Miss baseball team.

The Minnesota Vikings quarterback told the Golden Eagles that if they can make it back to the College World Series for the second straight year, he will return for one more season in the NFL.

Favre has left fans hanging since the Vikings lost to the New Orleans Saints in the NFC Championship game.
