Dream Team induction today

Basketball: There had never been a basketball team like the one that climbed onto the gold medal platform in 1992.

Now the members of the Dream Team are ready to stand together again – as Hall of Famers.

Already inducted as individuals, John Stockton (in photo), Michael Jordan, Larry Bird and Magic Johnson will be among those enshrined as teammates today in Springfield, Mass.

Dream Teamers Scottie Pippen and Karl Malone also will be enshrined as individuals.

The 1960 U.S. Olympic gold medalists – a powerhouse in their own right with Jerry West and Oscar Robertson – also will be inducted during the ceremony at Symphony Hall in Springfield, Mass.

The 1992 team scored an Olympic-record 117.3 points per game, winning by an average of 43.8.

The team also included Charles Barkley, David Robinson, Patrick Ewing, Clyde Drexler, Chris Mullin and Christian Laettner.

Only Mullin, who has been a finalist, and Laettner, the team’s lone collegian, aren’t in as individuals.

The entire roster will attend; Chuck Daly, the team’s head coach, died last year.

Ryan in trouble with Mom

Football: Rex Ryan’s mother has already scolded him. A little soap might be next for the New York Jets’ foul-mouthed coach.

After a Rex-pletive-filled appearance in the premiere episode of HBO’s “Hard Knocks” on Wednesday, Ryan got a call from Mom.

And, then, like a good son, he said he was sorry.

“Sometimes you get rolling and that’s what happens,” the usually brash Ryan said Thursday. “I don’t know why. I apologize if I offended more people than I usually offend.”

Swearing is nothing new for coaches. It’s just rare for fans to hear it on national TV. “Hard Knocks” is an uncensored look at the Jets through training camp.

Golf section inserted today

Golf: Palouse Ridge Golf Club on the Washington State University campus is the crown jewel of courses in the area.

It keeps pretty good company with the likes of the University of Idaho, Bryden Canyon in Lewiston and Quail Ridge in Clarkston.

Staff writer Steve Bergum and columnist John Blanchette took on the four courses in two days and came away impressed.

Our final golf section of the season is inserted in today’s paper and includes Bergum’s reviews of the four courses and Blanchette’s take on what Palouse Ridge is up against in attracting more golfers.
