Athletics 3, Angels 1: At Anaheim, Calif., Dan Haren scattered eight hits and struck out five in a complete game, Jay Payton hit a two-run homer and Milton Bradley also homered to lead Oakland past Los Angeles.

Red Sox 9, Indians 8: At Boston, David Ortiz hit a game-ending, three-run homer in the ninth inning to give the Red Sox a win over Cleveland that kept them in sole possession of first place in the A.L. East. Ortiz leads the big leagues with 37 homers and 105 RBIs.

Devil Rays 7, Tigers 3: At St. Petersburg, Fla., Casey Fossum allowed one run over seven innings while matching a career high of 10 strikeouts, and Damon Hollins and Travis Lee hit two-run homers to lead Tampa Bay to a victory over Detroit.

Twins 15, Rangers 2: At Minneapolis, Torii Hunter had a homer and four RBIs in his return from the disabled list, and Carlos Silva pitched seven strong innings to lead Minnesota in a victory over Texas. Josh Rabe added a home run and three RBIs for the Twins.

White Sox 8, Royals 4: At Kansas City, Mo., Jermaine Dye, Joe Crede, and Alex Cintron homered to lead Chicago to a victory over the Royals. Jose Contreras went seven innings, giving up four runs and striking out three for his 10th win.
