Lisa Gerber grew up back East. She moved West for the skiing and hasn’t returned. Lucky for us.
On Friday, Gerber debuts with The Spokesman-Review with a weekly column about skiing in the Inland Northwest. She will focus on local hills – 49 Degrees North, Schweitzer Mountain, Lookout Pass, Silver Mountain and Mt. Spokane – and inform readers about what’s happening on the slopes, the hot new equipment, latest techniques, trends and much more.
Because of the enormous popularity of skiing in our area, the idea of presenting a weekly column about skiing is long overdue. We’ve always known that, but finding the right person to do it has always been the show-stopper.
Fortunately, Tom and Karen Stebbins, who run Vision Marketing and work with the Inland Northwest Ski Association, stepped up with a list of possibilities. Lisa’s name was at the top of the list.
After reviewing her resume, it was easy to see why. This is a person with a passion for skiing and, as a bonus, she can write. Always a good combination when looking for someone to do a column on skiing.
“I love the speed, I love the fitness of it,” says Gerber, 37. “I also like it as an activity to share with my friends and family. There is nothing like going out and getting all worked up in the cold winter’s day and then coming in at the end to some hot chili and a fire.”
Gerber, originally from Cazenovia, N.Y. (near Syracuse), moved to Aspen, Colo., in 1989 and has lived in Sandpoint since 2001. She has been downhill skiing since she was 4 and cross country skiing for 20 years. Three years ago she took up telemarking and back country skiing.
“I want to share my passion for winter and winter sports with the readers,” Gerber said. “Winter shouldn’t be something we dread each year. It should be something we wait for with anticipation.
“I look forward to covering many topics such as getting into the sport, the fitness of it, the importance of sustainable, green slopes, the racing world, what’s going on each week at the Inland Northwest Ski areas and more.”
If you’re into skiing, this column promises to be a must-read.
