Obituaries

James Agidius Moscow, Idaho

Viewing for James Peter Agidius, 80, will be held today from 9 a.m. to noon at Short’s Funeral Chapel in Moscow. Memorial service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Moscow Church of the Nazarene. Burial will follow at the Moscow Cemetery.

Mr. Agidius, who was born in Portland, died Friday of complications from lung disease.

He grew up near The Dalles, Ore., and graduated from The Dalles High School in 1936 and worked for several cattle ranches.

Mr. Agidius joined the Navy in 1938 and went on active duty in 1939. He served on the Light Cruiser USS Honolulu, surviving the raid on Pearl Harbor.

Mr. Agidius served in the Pacific Theatre and then was stationed in Washington, D.C., in 1944.

He returned to The Dalles after his military service in 1946 and then moved to Kodiak, Alaska, where he served as master of arms on Kodiak Naval Base for three years.

Mr. Agidius moved to Moscow and joined the University of Idaho ROTC staff as an instructor, teaching from 1949-52, and then moved to Virginia for six years, where he went to sea with the amphibious fleet, including spending time in the Mediterranean Sea.

Mr. Agidius returned to Moscow in 1958 and continued with the university ROTC program. He retired in 1962 as a Senior Chief Gunners Mate-GMS 8.

He worked at Gritman Medical Center in Moscow as a maintenance/ electrical engineer for 18 years before retiring again.

Mr. Agidius was a member of the American Legion Dudley Loomis Post 6 in Moscow, and helped organize the Junior Rifle Club through the American Legion and Eagles Lodge.

He was past president of the local chapter of the National Wildlife Federation and was a member of the Moscow Church of the Nazarene.

Mr. Agidius was a member of the Twin Butte Bowling Team and ran the Twin Butte Evergreens Christmas Tree Farm for more than 25 years.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Netta; six children, Pat Agidius of Kirkland, Wash., Jeanne Kalbfleisch of Yakima, Paul Agidius and Carrie Agidius, both of Moscow, Kathy Kite of Boise and Hazel Bryan of Colfax, Wash.; 16 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Tommy Smith Sr. Moses Lake

Visitation for Tommy Lee Smith Sr., 37, will be from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. today at Kayser’s Chapel of Memories in Moses Lake. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Galilee Missionary Baptist Church in Moses Lake. Interment will follow at Pioneer Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Smith, who was born in Jersey City, N.J., died Saturday from complications due to asthma.

After graduation from high school, he served in the Navy.

He then moved to Spokane in 1990 and to Moses Lake in 1996.

In 1993 he received his minister’s license, and in 1997 was ordained as an elder and served as associate pastor in charge of ministries at the New Light Missionary Baptist Church in Moses Lake.

In January, Mr. Smith founded the Eastern Bible Institute of Moses Lake.

He was a volunteer for many nonprofit organizations throughout the Spokane and Moses Lake areas, and was currently attending Big Bend Community College, where he was majoring in computer science.

Survivors include his wife of six years, Connie; three sons, Tommy Jr., Isaiah and Shyrone; a daughter, LaTasha; his mother, Clara Smith of South Carolina; a sister, Carrie Smith of South Carolina; two brothers, Eddie Smith Jr. of New Jersey and Terry Smith of Moses Lake; and a god-daughter, JoAnna Mahogany.

Dorothy Youd Bothell, Wash.

Visitation for Dorothy L. Youd, 69, will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South. Funeral will be at noon Thursday at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mrs. Youd, who was born in Brazilton, Kan., died Thursday.

She moved to Spokane in 1951.

Mrs. Youd was an office manager and a licensed funeral director for Ball and Dodd Funeral Home from 1970 until her retirement in 1990.

She was a member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church and moved to Bothell five years ago.

Survivors include her husband of 49 years, Frank; two daughters, Connie Curtin and Jeri Youd, both of Bothell; a sister, Estella Moody of Lake Oswego, Ore.; and a grandson.

Memorial contributions may be made to Pilgrim Lutheran Church.

Willis ‘Bill’ Walker Spokane

Visitation for Willis E. “Bill” Walker, 75, will be from noon to 8 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints, 4444 E. 43rd. Interment will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mr. Walker, who was born in Jackson, Mo., died Saturday.

He moved to Grand Coulee in 1936 and graduated from Grand Coulee High School.

Mr. Walker served in the Navy on an ammunition supply ship in the Pacific Theater during World War II.

After the Navy, he began work for the Bureau of Reclamation at Coulee Dam as an iron worker. He retired in 1980 and moved to Spokane.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, the Elks, Eagles, Moose and Masonic lodges, and Ironworkers Local No. 14.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Olga; four daughters, Jeraldine Caviness of Spokane, Deana Ladwig of Davenport, Wash., Terri Chamblee of Shreveport, La., and Tana Bonzon of Auburn, Wash.; two brothers, Calvin Walker of Toppenish, Wash., and Wayne Walker of Seattle; 14 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of Eastern Washington.

Lloyd Bowman Spokane

Memorial service for Lloyd E. Bowman, 82, will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Whitworth Community Presbyterian Church. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Bowman, who was born in Kendallville, Ind., died Friday.

He received his bachelor’s degree at Eastern Michigan University and his master’s degree in business administration at Western Michigan University.

He married Dorothy Zorn in 1935.

Mr. Bowman was a professor of business at Ferris State College in Big Rapids, Mich., before retiring in 1981 and moving to Spokane.

He won a week’s performance at the Fox Theater in Detroit in 1937 in a musical competition. An Eagle Scout, he represented his home town at the 1929 Boy Scout World Jamboree in England.

He was a member of the Whitworth Community Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; two daughters, Rebecca Kramarz of Spokane and Mary Beth Kowalski of Fort Collins, Colo.; a son, Lloyd Bowman Jr. of Phoenix; and eight grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Whitworth Community Presbyterian Church.

Anna Marie Henry Coeur d’Alene

Memorial service for Anna Marie Henry, 67, will be today at 11 a.m. at English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene.

Ms. Henry, who died Wednesday, was born in Kellogg.

She graduated from Kellogg High School in 1949 and worked for Thornhill Furniture. She worked as a secretary for Hecla Mining Co. from 1962 until 1991 when she retired.

Ms. Henry was a member of the Kellogg Women’s Bowling Association and the Coeur d’Alene Business and Professional Women’s Organization.

Survivors include three cousins, Adolf Nissen of Spokane, Robert Henry of Everett and Ruth Kellogg of Salem, Ore.; and special friends, Chester, Mary and Mark Maston.

Doris Pittman Fairfield

Graveside service for Doris Pittman, 87, will be at 2 p.m. today at Pines Cemetery in Opportunity. Schanzenbach Funeral Home in Fairfield, is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Pittman, who was a lifetime resident of the area, died Friday.

She was a homemaker, and was a member of the Waverly Rebekah Lodge and numerous bridge clubs.

Mrs. Pittman is survived by her husband of 67 years, Carl; two sons, Gary Pittman of Vermont and Cory Pittman of Fairfield; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Edna Wilhelm Otis Orchards

Memorial service for Edna Frances Wilhelm, 90, will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the New Hope Christian Fellowship Church in Otis Orchards. Service will be held March 25 in Billings, Mont., with burial to follow in Rockvale, Mont. English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of local arrangements.

Mrs. Wilhelm, who was born in Joliet, Mont., died Friday.

She lived in Pryor, Mont., for many years and had co-owned the Pryor Garage for 69 years. She also served as the Pryor postmaster for 26 years.

Mrs. Wilhelm moved to Otis Orchards in 1996 to live with her granddaughter, Jennifer Chapman.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Homer.

Survivors include three sons, Harlan Wilhelm of Post Falls, Keith Wilhelm of Alaska and Clayton Wilhelm of Montana; two daughters, Thelma MacDonald of Oregon and Phyllis Logan of Montana; two sisters, Edith Rowland of Montana and Mary Hibscher of Richland; two brothers, Dunham McMillen of Montana and Leonard McMillen of California; 13 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Bernard Schoen Spokane

Visitation for Bernard A. Schoen, 90, will be from noon to 8 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Redeemer Lutheran Church. Interment will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mr. Schoen, who was born in Green Bay, Wis., died Friday.

He graduated from the University of North Dakota in 1936 and from the University of Wisconsin in 1937.

Mr. Schoen taught school in North Dakota, Montana, Idaho and Washington. He retired from the Central Valley School District in 1973.

He was a member of the Spokane Valley Camera Club and was a founding member of the Spokane Symphony, where he played the violin for 36 years.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Dorothy; a daughter, Karen Carter of Hawthorne, Calif.; a son, Richard Schoen of Spokane; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Patricia Stephens Greenacres

Visitation for Patricia L. Stephens, 63, will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Pines Cemetery.

Mrs. Stephens, who was born in Iowa Falls, Iowa, died Friday.

She lived in Popejoy, Iowa, until moving to San Diego in 1947. She graduated from Kearny Mesa High School in 1953.

In 1981 she moved to Spokane and made her home in Greenacres, where she worked for McKesson Pharmaceuticals of Spokane.

Mrs. Stephens was a member of the Pasadena Park Church of the Nazarene.

Survivors include her husband of 40 years, Arthur; two daughters, Cindy Day and Sharon Talley, both of Otis Orchards; a son, Michael Stephens of Greenacres; her father, John McCarthy of San Diego; a brother, Gary McCarthy of Olympia; two sisters, Maureen Hall of San Diego and Janet McCarthy of San Luis Obispo, Calif.; and five grandchildren.

Fay Bakken Spokane

Funeral for Fay Klein Bakken, 86, will be at 11 p.m. Thursday at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mrs. Bakken, who was a lifetime resident of Spokane, died Friday.

She worked in retail sales as a salesperson for more than 40 years, with the majority of that time at Savon’s.

Her husband, Alvin Bakken, died in 1974.

Survivors include a son, Gary Bakken of Spokane; two grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Spokane.

Terrance ‘Terry’ Hammel Chewelah, Wash.

Graveside service for Terrance “Terry” Hughes Hammel, 83, will be at 2:30 p.m. today at the Chewelah Memorial Park in Chewelah. Burial will follow. Schanzenbach Funeral Home in Chewelah is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hammel, who was born in Hanover, N.D., died Thursday.

He worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps in North Dakota prior to Chewelah in 1940.

Mr. Hammel then worked for Northwest Magnesite and then served in the Army during World War II.

In 1943 he married Leona Zibell in Coeur d’Alene, and they returned to Chewelah after the war.

He went back to work at Northwest Magnesite until 1969 when the plant closed.

Mr. Hammel then worked for Stevens County driving a truck and snow plow.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Larry Hammel of Newport, Wash.; two daughters, Terene Ford of Elisnore, Utah, and Patty Henniger of Brightwood, Ore.; three sisters, Gladys Anderson of Bismarck, N.D., and Muriel Ingeln and Isabel Light both of Vancouver, Wash.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Frederick Thomas Colville, Wash.

Funeral service for Frederick M. Thomas, 78, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Danekas Funeral Chapel in Colville. Burial will follow at the Highland Cemetery in Colville.

Mr. Thomas, who was born in Meyers Falls, Wash., died Saturday.

He graduated from high school in Colville in 1938, and worked at Barmans Hardware store and the IGA grocery store in Colville for several years.

In 1942 he joined the Army and served for three years.

In 1952 he married Evelyn Fogle in Colville.

Mr. Thomas managed the Washington State Liquor Store in Colville from 1946 until his retirement in 1976. He also worked as a bookkeeper at Colville Valley Concrete for more than 30 years.

He was a member of the Colville American Legion Post, the Elks Lodge and the Knight of Pythias Lodge.

Survivors include a daughter, Lori Hedrick, and two sons, Gary and Ron Thomas, all of Colville; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Evelyn (Johnson) Henderson Spokane

Funeral service for Evelyn Pearl (Johnson) Henderson, 90, will be at 11 a.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North. Interment will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park. Her son, Rev. Glenn Johnson, will officiate the service.

Mrs. Henderson, who was born in Latah, Wash., died Saturday.

She graduated from Lewis and Clark High School and was a homemaker.

In 1928 she married Lyle Johnson. He died in 1984.

Mrs. Henderson was a member of the North View Bible Church.

She married Frank Henderson in 1990, and they resided in Seattle until his death in 1993. She then moved back to Spokane.

Survivors include three sons, Glenn Johnson of Manilla, Philippines, and Dale and Don Johnson, both of Spokane; 13 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Maizie Klein Spokane

Memorial service for Maizie O. Klein, 85, will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Riplinger Funeral Home.

Mrs. Klein, who was a 56-year resident of Spokane, died Saturday.

She was born in Getchell, Wash., and worked as a homemaker.

Mrs. Klein was a member of the Jewel Court Order of Amarath No. 50 where she was royal matron in 1966, 1973, 1979 and 1985. She was also a member of the Spokane Chapter No. 163 Order of the Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile No. 6, Rebekah Lodge No. 38 and the Golden Chain.

She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Norman.

Leona Spellman Coeur d’Alene

Graveside service for Leona Mary Spellman, 93, will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Forest Cemetery in Coeur d’Alene. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Spellman, who was born in Iowa, died Sunday.

She grew up in Iowa and Nebraska, and then lived in North and South Dakota before moving to Coeur d’Alene in 1936.

Mrs. Spellman was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Coeur d’Alene.

Her husband, Henry, died in 1983.

Survivors include two sons, Russell Spellman of Davis Lake, Wash., and Duane Spellman of Texas; a daughter, Shirley Rhodes of Coeur d’Alene; six grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Howard Jensen Spokane

Funeral service for Howard “Spike” Jensen, 91, will be at 1 p.m. today at Heritage Funeral Home.

Mr. Jensen, a 31-year resident of Spokane, died Friday.

He was born in Hall, Mont., and worked for the Milwaukee Railroad as a car foreman for 30 years.

Mr. Jensen was a member of the Eagles Masonic Lodge and the Lilac City Caravaneers.

Survivors include his wife, Helen; a stepdaughter, Norma Keen of Lewiston; a stepson, Gary VerSteegh of Anaconda, Mont.; eight stepgrandchildren and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the Arthritis Foundation.

Anthony Anselm Spokane

Funeral service for Anthony Allen “Tony” Anselm, 12, will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Riplinger Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Tony, who was born at Fairchild Air Force Base, died Saturday from pneumonia.

He is survived by his parents, Harvey and Dusty Anselm, and two brothers, Adam and Jesse Anselm, all at home; his grandfather, Frank Pilant of Spokane; his grandmother, Ruth Anselm of California, and his grandparents, Bill and Madeline Pruyne of Rainier, Ore.

Evelyn Peacock Spokane

Private service for Evelyn R. Peacock, 82, was held. HennesseySmith Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Peacock, who was born in Coeur d’Alene, died March 3.

She married William Peacock in 1936. He preceded her in death.

She was a 60-year resident of Spokane and was a homemaker.

Mrs. Peacock held various offices for the Women of the Moose.

Survivors include a daughter, Shirley Stone of Spokane; a son, Douglas Peacock of Cleveland; a sister, Hilda Humphrey of Coeur d’Alene; and a granddaughter.

Robert Clausen Colfax, Wash.

Graveside service for Robert Andrew Clausen, 80, was Monday at the Colfax Cemetery.

Born in Indian Valley, Idaho, he died Saturday.

Mr. Clausen graduated in 1937 from high school in Payette, Idaho, and in 1939 married Doris Yager in Payette.

He managed a Safeway store in Ontario, Ore., until 1966, when he purchased IGA Foodliner in Colfax. He operated that store until he retired in 1973.

Mr. and Mrs. Clausen spent many winters in Mesa, Ariz.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Gary Clausen of Colfax and Robert Clausen of Pullman; a daughter, Linda Hagen of Denver; two brothers, Raymond Clausen of New Meadows, Idaho, and Jim Clausen of Portland; a sister, Anna Missoula of Lake Fork, Idaho; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
