Benzel, Holt Win Championships

Ryan Benzel of Ritzville and Spokane’s Britney Holt won the championships in the 20th Washington Junior Golf Association on Friday.

Benzel fired a 2-under-par 69 on the 6,378-yard Manito Golf and Country Club course to win the boys title.

Holt took a three-stroke lead into the final round and won by four. She closed with a 74 at Manito for a 218 total, 3 over for 54 holes.

Corey Prugh of Spokane was the boys 12-14 winner by two strokes after a 73 for 217.

Holt and Kelly Kamimura of Burlingotn qualified for the Junior Americas’ Cup matches Aug. 4-8 at Mill Creek. They also qualified for the U.S. Women’s Amateur, and they opted to play in that tournament, Aug. 5-10 at Lincoln, Neb.

At the Washington State Women’s Golf Association Championship at the Walla Walla Country Club, Clarkston’s Sharon Vahlkamp beat Crystal Baker of Glen Acres 1 up to win Flight 6 of the tournament.

In Flight 13, also from Clarkston, Cindy Murray beat Joan Holbrook of Longview 3 to 2.

Former PGA Tour pro Mark Wurtz of Port Ludlow, Wash., Bud Still of Dieboll, Texas, and Robin Byrd of Austin, Texas, shared the opening-round lead in the Portland Invitational golf tournament at Cornelius, Ore.

Mark Rohde of Spokane shot 67.

With play on both of Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club’s two courses, Wurtz shot a 7-under-par 65 at 6,513-yard Witch Hollow. Still and Byrd had 6-under 65s at 6,839-yard Ghost Creek.

Basketball

Northwest All-Stars defeated Tulsa, Okla., ranked third in the BCI Boys Summer Prep International Basketball Tournament 84-82. They also beat Denver Recreation Club 68-40 Thursday at the U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Colo.

On Friday, the All-Stars were down 6 points with 25 seconds left to play. With 1.3 seconds to play, Ferris’ Tommy Servine sank two free throws for the win.

Justin Bursch (Ferris) had hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 82. The All-Stars are 2-0 in pool play.

Baseball

In AA Legion action, Eagle Hardware beat Olympic Sports 9-5 to tie their best-of-three series at 1-1.

Game three of the series will be played at Whitworth College today at noon.

The winner will advance to play Maxwell House, which beat B&P 2, 2-games-to-0, Saturday at 5 p.m. to determine the AA City Playoffs.

Maxwell House beat B&P 2 11-2 in the second game of their series.

In a AAA game, the Bandits beat the Blue Devils 9-7. With the score tied at 7 in the top of the eighth, the Bandits’ Jeff Dahman scored on a pass ball and Justin McKitterick scored on Brandon Mollett’s base hit.
