Cougars Barely Clean Up At Their Annual Dial Classic

Peter Harriman Correspondent

College women

Jade Hyett, an old hand with great hands, made a steal with 1.9 seconds remaining to give the Washington State women’s basketball team a 69-68 victory over Fresno State on Friday night at the 17th Dial Classic in Pullman.

Hyett, a two-year starter at point guard, made nine steals, none more crucial than when she picked off the low pass to Fresno’s Michele Anderson. Hyett dove into the lane to intercept, ending the Bulldogs’ last good chance to score.

The Cougars will play Weber State for the tournament title tonight at 8.

In a game in which the Cougars committed 24 turnovers, WSU made a final one as Jennifer Kerns lost the ball at midcourt with 1 second to go. FSU (4-1) was only able to turn that into a desperate heave by Connie Krueger that fell well short of the basket.

“Don’t tell coach, but I lost sight of my man. I knew she was cutting back door; I read the eyes of the player who had the ball,” Hyett said of her saving steal.

Added WSU coach Harold Rhodes: “That’s a big key for us for Jade to come up with as many steals as she did. It’s amazing when your point guard gets more steals than assists, more steals than points.”

Hyett finished with four assists and one point.

Yvonne Kunze, a 6-foot-4 junior, led the Cougars with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Senior Kristin Erickson came off the bench and added 16 points.

Weber State 73, Gonzaga 67

Also at the Dial Classic, Chelsea Herman hit three consecutive shots late in the second half and Gonzaga (1-5) cut a 12-point deficit to six but never managed to overcome Weber State (1-3).

GU coach Kellee Barney was dismayed by her team’s 19-percent shooting in the first half and by its inconsistent play throughout.

“We’re just not good enough to have lapses and come back. We’ve got to play 40 minutes and be mentally focused and into it,” Barney said.

Building on Herman’s flurry, Gonzaga was able to draw within four points twice in the final minute. But the Bulldogs were forced to foul and Weber’s Jodi Wimmer hit four free throws to stop GU’s run. Wimmer led all scorers with 28 points. Herman paced GU with 16.

Gonzaga will play Fresno State today in the consolation game at 6 p.m.
