Heisman hopefuls

Leeland McElroy, RB/Sr., Texas A&M: In Aggies’ 14-7 loss to Texas Tech, the Red Raiders held McElroy, the nation’s leader in all-purpose offense, to 80 total yards. McElroy had been averaging 16 points per game but scored just once.

Keyshawn Johnson, WR, USC: In Trojans’ 26-16 win over Cal, Johnson had his streak of 100-yard catch games snapped as he was held to 5 catches for 57 yards.

Eddie George, RB/Sr., Ohio State: In Buckeyes’ 28-25 victory over Penn State, George scored the final TD, a 6-yarder. He finished with 105 yards on 24 carries. George has 109 carries for 658 yards, a 5.9 average and six touchdowns on the season.

Warrick Dunn, RB/Jr., FSU: In Noles’ 41-17 drubbing of Miami, the tailback ran for a career-high 184 yards and a touchdown. Dunn has gained more than 100 yards in each of Florida State’s games and has totaled 689 yards on 67 carries for a gaudy 10.3 average.

Troy Davis, RB/So., Iowa State: In Cyclones’ 39-26 loss to Oklahoma, the Sooners held Davis is check. Davis, who was leading the nation with a 228-yard rushing average, managed only 23 yards in nine carries over the final three quarters. He finished with 89 yards in 21 carries, just enough to make him the sixth player and first sophomore in major-college history to run for 1,000 yards in five games.

Hopeful with the day off

Tommie Frazier of the No. 2 ranked team must wait until next Saturday when Nebraska takes on Missouri.

Sideline salutes

Tim Biakabutuka of Michigan rushed for a career-high 205 yards on 34 carries in a 19-13 loss to Northwestern.

Quarterback Mike Cavanaugh ran for two TDs as Columbia ended the nation’s longest collegiate winning streak at 24 games with a 24-14 victory over Penn. Penn had not lost since Nov. 7, 1992, when it was beaten 20-14 at Princeton.

Deion Sanders, a two-time All-American cornerback at Florida State, returned to his alma mater Saturday night for the retirement of his uniform No. 2.
