Butter Up Darigold Judges

Rick Bonino Food Editor

Now that the holiday baking season has officially begun, maybe you can make your efforts really pay off this year.

Seattle’s Darigold dairy folks have announced a “Whip Up Your Best Holiday Entertainers” recipe contest, for appetizer or dessert recipes using at least 1/2 cup of butter.

First prize is a 7-day Alaskan cruise for two, with Calphalon cookware and Henkels knives for the top runners-up. Everyone who enters gets a coupon for a free pound of Darigold butter.

Postmark deadline is Dec. 30. For an official entry form, phone (800) 715-6455. For recipe ideas using butter, send a stamped, self-addressed envelope to: Butter Releases, Darigold Inc., P.O. Box 79007, Seattle, WA 98119.

Kitchen aid

Baking advice is just a phone call away with the General Mills Holiday Hot Line, (800) 793-0464, from 5:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. PST Monday through Friday, and from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.

You can also leave your name and address to be mailed copies of quick cookie recipes made from mixes and easy decorating ideas.

Sweet stroll

If you’d rather let someone else do the baking, Garland Avenue Alliance Church is having a “Cookie Walk” sale Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at the church, 2011 W. Garland.

A variety of Christmas cookies and candies will be on display to mix and match as you like, sold by the pound, with gourmet coffee available to sip while you shop. For information, call 327-7700.

Bite me

And if fortune cookies are more your style, here’s a perfect stocking stuffer: The Amazing Talking Fortune Cookie.

Run your thumbnail down the side of the talking fortune strip inside each cookie and hear such sentiments as “You turn me on,” “Let’s have a party” and “I love you.”

Cost is $2.95 per cookie, with a portion of proceeds donated to services for the visually impaired. To order, call (510) 839-4472 or write to: Marc Snyder, P.O. Box 10796, Oakland, CA 94610.

Fast food

During the holiday rush, it’s even more difficult than usual to balance a frantic schedule with your nutritional needs.

Registered dietitian Craig T. Hunt will discuss ways to put together quick, nourishing meals in a “Slam Dunk Healthy Cooking Class” on Thursday from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Gold’s Gym, 2921 E. 57th.

Cost is $5 for gym members, or $10 for non-members. Pre-registration is requested by calling 448-5800.
