Gu Slim Loser To Top-Ranked Csu Fullerton

Gonzaga took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning against Cal-State Fullerton, but the Titans erupted for three runs after two outs and went on to beat the Bulldogs 8-6 in Fullerton, Calif.

The Titans, ranked No. 1 by both Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball, used consecutive two-out singles by Jeremy Giambi and Brian Loyd to score three times in the fifth.

Cal-State Fullerton (19-3) added two unearned runs in the sixth inning and two more in the seventh.

Gonzaga (6-4) had a chance to send the game into extra innings, but Jerrod Wong lined out to the first baseman, who made a bare-handed grab, with runners at second and third to end the game.

The teams meet again tonight at 7.

Washington State University pitcher Kyle Kawabata was named Pac-10 Northern Division Pitcher of the Week. Kawabata went 2-0 with a 2.16 earned run average, grabbing wins over Lewis and Clark State and Washington.

Basketball: WSU junior forward Mark Hendrickson was named to the All-Pacific-10 men’s basketball team, the conference announced.

UCLA forward Ed O’Bannon, who averages 20.1 points and 8.1 rebounds per game, and Arizona guard Damon Stoudamire, who averages 23 points and 7.4 assists, were Pac-10 Co-Players of the Year.

In addition, California forward Tremaine Fowlkes was named Pac-10 Freshman of the Year and UCLA’s Jim Harrick was named Coach of the Year.

Harrick, 56, has led the No. 1 Bruins to a 24-2 record this year, his seventh season with UCLA.

Also earning All-Pac-10 honors were Oregon State senior forward Brent Barry, Arizona State junior forward Mario Bennett, Stanford junior guard Dion Cross, UCLA senior guard Tyus Edney; Stanford sophomore guard Brevin Knight, Arizona senior forward Ray Owes and Oregon senior guard Orlando Williams.

Gonzaga University is holding a no-host NCAA Selection Sunday Party at Cavanaugh’s Inn at the Park beginning at 1:30 Sunday afternoon.

Coach Dan Fitzgerald, his staff and players will be in attendance. The party is open to the public.

Track and field: Washington State University senior Christos Pallakis set a school record by clearing 18-6 1/2 (5.65m) in the pole vault at the World Indoor Track and Field Championships in Barcelona, Spain.

Pallakis broke his own record of 18-5 set last month in Reno, Nev.

Pallakis, competing for the Greece National team, will join 10 other competitors, including world recordholder Sergei Bubka, in the finals on Sunday.

Golf: Hangman Valley Golf Course opens for play on 15 permanent greens today.
