Unbeaten Mead Beats Ferris

Mead went on a 15-0 run that spanned halftime and the Panthers went on to defeat Ferris 54-45 in a battle between the first- and thirdplace teams in Greater Spokane League girls basketball at the Coliseum Friday night.

There were seven ties and five lead changes in the first half and Ferris (6-3, 10-3) was leading 26-24 when Mead sophomore Jennifer Bennett dropped in a soft lefthanded hook shot to tie the game a minute before halftime.

The Panthers (9-0, 13-0) then forced a turnover that Stacy Clinesmith turned into a fastbreak layup. After a missed Ferris shot, Danielle Tutt picked up her third foul with 6 seconds left and Kelly Benad made two free throws for a 30-26 halftime lead.

Clinesmith converted three fastbreaks to open the second half. She turned one into a three-point play as Tutt picked up her fourth foul, and fed Allison Beatty on a fastbreak, making it 39-26 and Ferris never recovered.

“We wanted to come out and set the tempo,” Clinesmith said after scoring 15 points. “We wanted to get the lead and get them frustrated. Mostly we played good defense, got steals and moved it up as fast as we could.”

It didn’t help that Tutt, who had a great first half with 11 points, got in foul trouble and Emily Ireland, who was averaging 20 points, was scoreless until late in the fourth quarter and finished with five.

“What I feel happened is they shut down Emily Ireland and we kind of panicked,” Ferris coach Janet Wolkey said. “What just killed us was the posts were playing so well together, Danielle Tutt was having the game of her life and I should have taken her out sooner. I thought two of the three fouls (in the first half) weren’t fouls and that upset me.”

Tutt and Jennifer Swinton had 19 of the first 24 Ferris points.
