Bartleson Leads Ewu To Third-Place Finish

Colleges

Freshman guard Kelly Bartleson scored 14 points to lead Eastern Washington University to a 53-39 win over Sacramento State and a third-place finish at the Stanford Fry’s Cardinal Classic in Palo Alto, Calif.

Bartleson was 6 of 12 from the field and 2 of 3 from 3-point range, while teammate Kristy Missall hauled down 10 rebounds for the Eagles.

EWU outrebounded the Hornets (5-6) 48-38, but Eagle coach Heidi VanDerveer said ball control was an even bigger factor.

“We wanted less than 16 turnovers in the game, and we had 12,” she said. “Jennifer Sutter did a great job of handling the ball and making good decisions.”

Sutter finished with just two points, but accounted for seven of the Eagles’ 16 assists.

Eastern was a 64-39 loser to Auburn in the first round of the tournament on Tuesday. VanDerveer said her team noticed an immediate difference against Sacramento State.Shelby Boudreaux had 11 points and 15 rebounds to lead Sacramento State.
