Corbin Fund-Raiser Features Early 20th Century Interiors

Lynn Gibson Correspondent

High tea on the veranda of the elegant Corbin Mansion, complete with scones and assorted desserts, may be the perfect epilogue to summer.

If you are a tea-on-the-veranda type, the gala event is Aug. 26, 3-5 p.m., in conjunction with a first-ever fund-raiser, the “Period Showcase: A Vignette of Early 20th Century Interiors.” This is a re-creation of turn-of-the-century home furnishings and accessories set in the rooms of the mansion, 507 W. Seventh.

The high tea is catered by A Catered Affair and also includes a vintage style show and admission to the “Period Showcase” tour, all for $12.50. Tickets are available by reservation only; call Lee at (509) 747-4926.

(An informal tea will be served Aug. 27 from 1-4 p.m. for $6 per person and does not require reservations.)

The “Period Showcase,” sponsored by the Corbin Art Center Guild, will raise funds to further restore the Corbin Mansion. The showcase runs Aug. 26 through Sept. 1, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.

Admission is $3 for adults; $2 for seniors and children ages 6-12. Children 5 and under are free. Tickets are available through G&B Select-a-Seat or at the door. For more information call (509) 625-6677.

Crayons for kids

Help Camp Fire Boys and Girls collect school supplies for kids in need in their first “Kids Helping Kids Back To School” campaign this Friday and Saturday.

Participating stores are Fred Meyer (Sullivan and Francis stores), Albertsons (at Liberty Lake), Super One (near Manito), Rosauers (14th and 29th Avenue stores), Office Depot (on Third Avenue), ShopKo (on South Regal), Tidymans (at Five Mile) and Payless (Argonne and Shadle Center stores).

Kids Week workshops

The Spokane Art School and the Spokane Federal Credit Union are co-sponsoring art workshops Aug. 18, 1-4 p.m., at the Spokane Art School.

Children 4-18 will explore the cultural influences of early settlers in Eastern Washington through workshops featuring origami, clay, stencil and beadwork. (Ages 4-6 must be accompanied by an adult.)

Admission is $1. To register, call the Spokane Art School at (509) 328-0900.

Back by popular demand

The Cheney Cowles Museum is adding another session of the fish print T-shirt class using the 200-year-old Japanese process called “gyotaku” on Aug. 18, 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.

Tuition is $5 which includes the T-shirt; children must be at least 6 years of age. Pre-registration and prepayment are required; call (509) 456-3932.

Ease school jitters

Because the first day of school often produces anxieties, Fred Rogers will rebroadcast five episodes of “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood,” Aug. 14-18, which explore the concerns children have about school. The show airs at 8 a.m. on KSPS-Channel 7, Spokane’s public television station.

As an extension of the week’s programming theme, Fred Rogers offers a free booklet, “When Your Child Goes To School.” To receive a copy, send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to: School, c/o Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, 4802 Fifth Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15213.
