John Robert Smith, transportation expert, to talk on benefits of public transit

A national expert in public transit will appear in Spokane on Wednesday for a free talk about the economic benefits of expanding transit services.

John Robert Smith, the chair of Transportation for America, will speak on public transit investment, the ability to attract workers with a good transportation network and the ability of transit to enhance downtown vitality.

He is a former mayor of Meridian, Mississippi, and has been a leader on transit issues.

The event begins at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the Philanthropy Center, 1020 W. Riverside Ave. A light breakfast will be offered.
