OUT THERE: Ten Spokane hills to climb before you die

Looking for a way to torture yourself? A collection, perhaps, of self-flagellating activities for the upcoming weekend?

The kind folks at Out There Monthly have it covered.

In the most recent issue, the local outdoor magazine has a list of the area's Top Ten gut-busting-est hills to climb on two wheels. From Tower Mountain to the Freya Hill, the list is something of a greatest hits of the greatest hills.

WARNING: The climbs are not for the faint of heart.

I'm proud to report (and be accused of boasting which yeah I am) that I've climbed eight of the ten, including the first (worst) six.

I stumbled upon White Road while riding around the city's border for some other newspaper. And, yes, it felt like an eternity, especially considering I was riding a rusty, beaten-down 1972 Nishiki ten-speed.

Still, the toughest hill out there, in my opinion, ranks fourth on their list: Tower Mountain. It's easy to find. Look for the antenna towers on the tall hill beyond the South Hill and aim thataway. Up, up, up, up and up. Then some more up.

Also, it must be said that my favorite, after-work climb didn't even make the list (though it is a runner-up). It's the climb to the water tower on Eagle Ridge southwest of town. I climbed that thing dozens of times while preparing for my ride across the state on Bicycle Route 10.

Which reminds me. Here's a photo from my favorite climb.

Did Out There miss any of your favorite climbs? Which one is the not to miss? Send me your pics!
