Vandals beat SJSU, off to best WAC start

Playing against high-scoring San Jose State on the road, the Idaho men trailed by eight at half and by five with 4:58 left. But then came a 17-2 flourish for the Vandals, who zoomed past the Spartans 75-67 in San Jose. The Vandals (9-6, 3-1) won for the third time in a row to solidify their best conference start since joining the WAC in 2005.

Five Vandals reached double figures in scoring, led by Deremy Geiger's 17 points. Jeff Ledbetter had 13 points, seven of which came in the last 4:33. The Vandals shot 67 percent in the second half and also shared the ball better than they have for much of the season -- they had 21 assists on 27 made baskets.

"The stat I like the best is 21 assists, 11 turnovers,” coach Don Verlin said. “We played very well down the stretch and in the entire second half.”

Clearly, Verlin has a lot to be pleased with. The Vandals were picked to finish eighth in the WAC and now are a last-second loss to New Mexico State away from being 4-0 in league play. They'll take on Nevada at home on Wednesday, a game that will be aired on ESPN2.

UI is in the middle of a lengthy road-dominated stretch. After back-to-back road wins, it plays four of the next six away from Cowan Spectrum.
