Kaniksu fires up to 18,500 acres, but Priest Lake area open for business

WILDFIRES -- The Kaniksu Complex fires, which include the Tower Fire, at more than 16,000 acres, and six smaller fires between the Pend Oreille River in Washington east toward Idaho has expanded to 18,500 acres, but Priest Lake-area businesses are open and so is Highway 57.

The smaller fires ranging from 5 to 600 acres in order of size include:

  • Baldy Fire, 16 miles north of Ione.
  • Onata Fire, 8 miles east/southeast of Ione.
  • Grease Creek Fire, southeast of Sullivan Lake.
  • Hall Mountain Fire east of Sullivan Lake.
  • Slate Creek and South Fork Slate Trail Creek fires, near the northwest boundary of Salmo-Priest Wilderness.

Fire managers will discuss the current fire situation and future plans at two community meetings:

  • Tonight, Aug. 28, 7:30 p.m., at the Camas Center, 1981 Le Clerc Rd. in Cusick, Wash.
  • Saturday night, Aug. 29, 7:30 p.m., at the Priest Lake Elementary School, 28047 ID-57, Priest River, Idaho.
