One last ride in the ‘White Whale’
Gail Curless, a long-time Dover resident, was on her way to Bonners Ferry this morning to sell her old pickup -- the "White Whale" -- when she stopped at the bank to deposit money. She was stranded there when her starter gave up the ghost. Before you judge the 2002 F350 for balking on the way to its sale, consider: Gail and her hubby, Randy, the former, long-time mayor of Dover, had driven the wheels off the rig, hauling horses, sheep and border collies all over the Northwest and Canada since they bought it used in 2008, when Gail retired from the Lake Pend Oreille School District. It had 249,000 miles on it when the engine went "whank" this morning. Gail told the responding employee from Clyde's Towing that the engine made that sound before dying. Whank. The tower asked to look at the engine. He discovered that it'd lost a bolt. He held it in place while Gail turned over the engine, with the instruction to not shut it off. She then drove the White Whale to Bonners Ferry and handed over the pink slip to a new owner. Gail tells Huckleberries of her last adventure in the White Whale: "I really loved that truck."
