New bills seek to update sex ed; wean state off federal ed $$…
While many education leaders spent Thursday morning listening to state superintendent Sherri Ybarra’s budget pitch, other news broke on the K-12 beat, writes Kevin Richert of Idaho Education News: One to redefine and update sex education in Idaho schools; and another to wean Idaho off all federal education funding by 2027.
Rep. Ron Nate, R-Rexburg, sponsored the education funding phaseout bill, which he filed as a personal bill and dubbed the “Education Freedom Act.”
House Education Chair Rep. Julie VanOrden, R-Pingree, sponsored the sex-education update bill, which was introduced this morning by the House Education Committee. She said the bill is an attempt to align sex education law with health education standards that were last updated in 2014.
