Eye On Boise

Lots going on in the Statehouse today…

The Senate is deep into debating SCR 108, the resolution calling for Idaho to petition for an Article V constitutional convention to add a balanced budget amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Opponents of the measure, including one dressed as Ben Franklin, have been meeting with lawmakers and speaking out against it.

Meanwhile, this morning, the House State Affairs Committee introduced a bill from Rep. Vito Barbieri, R-Dalton Gardens, to enact far-reaching new public records exemptions to shield from public disclosure legislators’ emails, texts and correspondence, plus numerous records of the Division of Legislative Audits, the Office of Performance Evaluations, and more. The House Education Committee introduced legislation from Rep. Ron Nate, R-Rexburg, to offer gun-safety classes in public schools. The Senate State Affairs Committee introduced anti-abortion legislation from Sen. Lori Den Hartog, R-Meridian, to require the state to distribute information telling women that a drug-induced abortion may be halted halfway through, despite physicians warning there's not enough science backing up that claim. And JFAC set budgets for the state’s court system, attorney general and more.

I’ll have more on all these topics and others later today.
