Top 25 capsules: No. 1 Duke rallies to beat Texas 85-78 in overtime

Freshman Marvin Bagley III had a career-high 34 points and added 15 rebounds, and No. 1 Duke rallied to defeat Texas 85-78 in overtime on Friday in the semifinals of the PK80 Invitational in Portland.

Gary Trent Jr. added 17 points for the Blue Devils (7-0), who trailed by 16 points in the second half and were forced to play five freshmen once senior Grayson Allen fouled out.

Dylan Osetkowski had 19 points and seven rebounds for Texas (4-1), which fell short of its first-ever victory over a top-ranked team.

Bagley tied the Blue Devils’ freshman scoring record set by J.J. Reddick on Jan. 15, 2003, against Virginia.

(18) Purdue 89, (2) Arizona 64: Dakota Mathias scored 24 points to help the Boilermakers (5-2) in the seventh-place game at the Battle 4 Atlantis in Paradise Island, Bahamas, sending the Wildcats (3-3) home with three losses in three days.

The Boilermakers had struggled with their shooting through two tournament losses of their own, but shot 57 percent and made 11 of 22 3-point attempts in a break-loose performance.

Carsen Edwards added 22 points for Boilermakers.

Freshman Deandre Ayton had 22 points before fouling out for the Wildcats, while junior Allonzo Trier – who came in averaging 27.8 points – finished with just eight on 3-for-10 shooting.

(3) Kansas 102, Oakland 59: Udoka Azubuike had a career-high 21 points and 10 rebounds and seven players finished in double figures to help the Jayhawks (5-0) beat the Golden Grizzlies (2-3) in Lawrence, Kansas.

Lagerald Vick had 15 points and seven rebounds while Devonte Graham had 14 points and seven assists for the Jayhawks, who won their 24th straight non-conference home game without breaking a sweat.

Malik Newman also scored 15 points, Svi Mykhailiuk had 14 and Mitch Lightfoot had a career-best 11 points with eight rebounds. Freshman forward Marcus Garrett added 10 points.

Kendrick Nunn scored 23 points for Oakland.

(4) Michigan St. 77, UConn 57: Cassius Winston scored 12 of his career-high 28 points during a 4-minute span late in the second half to help the Spartans (4-1) reach the championship game of the PK80 Invitational with a win over the Huskies (4-1).

Winston was responsible for 14 of Michigan State’s 16 points during the spurt where Michigan State hit eight straight shots and took a 14-point lead. Winston started the run with a 3-pointer and scored on pull-up jumpers and driving layups as the Spartans finally shook the Huskies.

Winston was 12-of-15 shooting and for the second straight game the Spartans got a big contribution from and unexpected source to help make up for star Miles Bridges being limited. Michigan State made 10 straight shots until Joshua Langford missed with 2:15 remaining.

Jalen Adams led UConn with 22 points and Terry Larrier added 18.

(5) Villanova 64, Northern Iowa 50: Mikal Bridges scored 18 points and the Wildcats (6-0) pulled away from the Panthers (5-2) in the Battle 4 Atlantis championship game.

Jalen Brunson added 16 points and was named the tournament’s most valuable player for Villanova, which led most of the way then used an 8-0 run in the final 4 minutes to turn away the Panthers.

It marked Villanova’s 17th straight win in a November tournament and marked the Wildcats’ fifth straight year with a championship, including the 2013 Atlantis title.

Juwan McCloud scored 13 points to lead the Panthers, who made just 6 of 23 3-pointers and didn’t get to the free-throw line.

(7) Florida 111, (17) Gonzaga 105 (2OT): Jalen Hudson had a career-high 35 points, including eight 3-pointers, for the Gators (5-0) in their win over the Bulldogs (4-1) at the PK80 Invitational.

Chris Chiozza added a career-high 26 points and 10 assists for the Gators, who go on to face No. 1 Duke in the bracket championship on Sunday. The Blue Devils rallied to defeat Texas 85-78 in overtime earlier in the day.

Hudson hit a 3-pointer with 1:41 left in the second overtime that put the Gators up 106-99. Gonzaga closed within 106-102 on Johnathan Williams’ layup, then within 109-105 on Corey Kispert’s 3-pointer with 11 seconds to go but couldn’t get closer.

Williams finished with a career-high 39 points and 12 rebounds for Gonzaga.

(9) North Carolina 87, Arkansas 68: Luke Maye had career-highs with 28 points and 16 rebounds and Kenny Williams had 16 of his 19 points in the second half to help the Tar Heels (5-0) beat the Razorbacks (4-1) in the semifinals of the PK80 Invitational.

The Tar Heels were smothering on the defensive end, holding the Razorbacks under 80 points for the first time this season. The Razorbacks shot just 32 percent in the first half and were dominated on the boards getting outrebounded 46-30.

Maye made 11 of 16 shots and 11 of his rebounds came at the defensive end.

Jaylen Barford led Arkansas with 21 points.

(14) Minnesota 69, Massachusetts 51: Jordan Murphy scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds to spark the Golden Gophers (6-0) in a win over the Minutemen (3-2) in the Barclays Center Classic.

Amir Coffey added nine points for Minnesota. Luwane Pipkins led the Minutemen with 18.

The Golden Gophers never trailed in winning their sixth straight game.

Arizona State 102, (15) Xavier 86: Tra Holder scored a career-high 40 points to lead the Sun Devils (6-0) past the Muskateers (5-1) in the championship game of the Las Vegas Invitational.

Holder scored 23 of his 40 points in the second half for Arizona State, which shot 55.9 percent from the field. The 6-foot-1 senior guard finished 14-of-22 shooting from the field, including 5 of 8 from 3-point range, and added four rebounds and four assists. He was named the tournament’s MVP.

J.P. Macura led Xavierwith 23 points.

(16) Texas A&M 81, Pepperdine 65: DJ Hogg scored 18 points and Tyler Davis had seven of his 15 in a key second-half stretch to lead the Aggies (5-0) in a win over the Waves (2-4) in College Station, Texas.

Kameron Edwards scored 20 points to lead the Waves, who trimmed their deficit to six twice in the second half, the final time with 7:31 remaining. However, after Amadi Udenyi’s layup cut the Aggies’ lead to 60-54, Pepperdine went 5:35 without a basket and A&M pulled away.

(19) Louisville 84, Saint Francis (Pa.) 72: Ray Spalding had 19 points and a career-high 13 rebounds before leaving midway through the second half with an injury for the Cardinals (4-0) held off the Red Flash (2-3) in Louisville, Kentucky.

Spalding’s layup provided a 66-44 lead with 12:38 remaining, but the junior forward went to the locker room several minutes later with what appeared to be an ankle injury. Saint Francis took advantage of his absence with a 23-10 run over 8:09 to get within 74-66, but Jordan Nwora and Deng Adel each answered with five points while Anas Mahmoud made consecutive blocks during one sequence to help the Cardinals pull away.

Keith Braxton had 25 points and 11 rebounds for the Red Flash.

(20) Seton Hall 72, Vanderbilt 59: Desi Rodriguez scored a season-high 27 points to lead the Pirates (5-1) past the Commodores (2-4) in the consolation game of the NIT Season Tip-Off at Barclays Center.

Rodriguez made 12 of 21 shots and keyed an offense, which shot 46.6 percent overall.

Angel Delgado added 15 points and eight rebounds as Seton Hall dominated after halftime by outscoring Vanderbilt 41-27.

Jeff Roberson had 20 points and 13 rebounds for his fourth double-double for Vanderbilt, which lost its fourth straight by shooting 33.9 percent, including 6 of 29 after halftime.

Washington State 84, (21) Saint Mary’s 79: Malachi Flynn scored 26 points and the Cougars (5-0) held off the Gaels (5-1) to reach the title game of the Wooden Legacy in Fullerton, California.

The Cougars put the Gaels in a 16-point hole, and then stayed cool when Saint Mary’s got within three on a 3-pointer by Jordan Ford with 47 seconds left.

Robert Franks and Jeff Pollard made layups to preserve the win for the Cougars, who shot 62 percent in the second half.

Emmett Naar scored 17 points for Saint Mary’s.

(23) West Virginia 83, UCF 45: James Bolden scored 17 points and Jevon Carter had 16 as the Mountaineers (5-1) beat the Knights (4-1) in a semifinal at the Advocare Invitational in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.

The Mountaineers used stellar defense to take a 43-20 lead at halftime. West Virginia held UCF to 19 percent shooting (4 for 21) and scored 17 points off the Knights’ 17 turnovers.

Seven-foot-6 center Tacko Fall had 11 points and eight rebounds for Central Florida.

(25) Alabama 71, BYU 59: John Petty scored 16 points to lead the Crimson Tide (5-0) in a win over the Cougars (3-2) in the Barclays Center Classic.

Dazon Ingram added 15 points for Alabama. off to its best start since 2012-13, when they began 6-0.

Yoeli Childs had 21 points for BYU, which lost for the second time in three gams.
