Women’s Top 25 capsules: Ariel Atkins and No. 2 Texas pound McNeese State, 100-34
Ariel Atkins scored 23 points and No. 2 Texas made eight 3-pointers in the first half in a 100-34 victory over McNeese State on Wednesday in Austin, Texas.
Texas (2-0) overwhelmed McNeese State (1-1) from the opening tip with a trapping defense that forced turnovers and put the game in the fast-tempo transition the Longhorns wanted. Texas forced 11 turnovers in the first quarter and turned them into 19 points and made five 3-pointers in bolting to a 32-8 lead. Atkins made the game’s first basket on a 3-pointer from the corner and finished the quarter with eight.
Texas’ 32 points was one shy of the school record for most in a quarter, a mark set just four days earlier in a season-opening win over Stetson.
McNeese could do nothing to slow the onslaught. The Cowgirls were just 4 of 26 shooting as Texas kept building its lead to 58-14 by halftime.
(9) Ohio State 99, Idaho 56: Linnae Harper had 18 points and a career-high 18 rebounds and the Buckeyes (2-1) beat the Vandals (1-1) in Columbus, Ohio, for the 1,000th victory in program history.
At 1,000-428, Ohio State became the ninth Division I women’s program to reach the milestone.
Stephanie Mavunga scored 14 of her 17 points in the first half and had 14 rebounds for Ohio State. Mikayla Ferenz led the Vandals with 17 points.
(13) Tennessee 89, James Madison 60: Jaime Nared had 25 points, nine rebounds and five assists and the Lady Vols (2-0) beat the Dukes (1-2) in Knoxville, Tennessee.
Rennia Davis added 17 points and eight rebounds for the Lady Vols. Mercedes Russell had 14 points and eight rebounds. Tennessee scored the first nine points and never trailed.
Lexie Barrier scored 14 points, and Kelly Koshuta had 13 for James Madison.
(18) Oregon State 98, Utah Valley 41: Marie Gulich scored 19 points on 9-of-9 shooting and the Beavers (2-0) matched a program-best with 17 3-pointers and beat the Wolverines (0-3) in Corvallis, Oregon.
Oregon State was 17 of 28 from 3-point range. The Beavers were 17 of 32 from long range against Loyola Marymount on Nov. 21, 2013.
Taylor Christensen led Utah Valley with 15 points.
