Beggs article salacious
I was dismayed to open The Spokesman-Review and read the front-page story about Breean Beggs’ defense of a free speech case in Bellingham 20 years ago. The opening paragraph notes that a leader of the Spokane County Republican Party has publicized Beggs’ participation because he “defended rape culture.” This accusation is inaccurate and offensive and simplifies a case that was actually about a bookstore’s right to sell a specific magazine.
This article does not address Beggs’ qualifications to be re-elected to the Spokane City Council, and everything to do with tarnishing his name in hopes that it will cause him to lose votes. I am dismayed by The Spokesman-Review’s editorial decision to feature this story first posted on Facebook.
As a voter, I want pertinent information to help me make electoral decisions. Beggs is a conscientious council representative who has worked hard to serve our city and does not deserve such treatment. I support his re-election. Salacious articles like this will drive away voters, not encourage us to be informed and reflective citizens.
Thank you, Shawn Vestal, for offering a measured response to this whisper campaign against Breean Beggs.
