McGrath, Cougars beat No. 24 USC in 10th

Washington State’s Patrick McGrath hit an RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning Saturday and the Cougars beat No. 24 USC 4-3 in a Pac-12 Conference game at Bailey-Brayton Field in Pullman.

Nick Tanielu scored the winning run after opening the inning with a single to center field.

The Cougars’ Kellen Camus got the final out in the top of the 10th and earned his fifth win of the season. He has 12 career victories in relief, one shy of the school record.

WSU starter Jason Monda allowed just two runs in eight innings of work.

The win gave the Cougars (20-22, 10-10) the series victory over the Trojans (24-20, 12-11). They’ll be looking for the sweep in the series finale today at noon.

• Gonzaga’s Mitchell Gunsolus and Caleb Wood each drew bases-loaded walks with two outs in the eighth and the Bulldogs went on to beat Brigham Young 6-4 in a West Coast Conference game at Miller Park in Provo, Utah.

The Cougars (18-27, 8-13) led 4-3 in the eighth before closer Brandon Kinser dealt with control issues. The win was GU’s second straight after it dropped the opener of the three-game set on Thursday.

Will Abram picked up his third win of the season after tossing a scoreless final three innings for GU (20-25, 15-9).

Wood had two RBIs and Payden Cawley Lamb drove in a run, but saw his 14-game hitting streak end.

• Washington ace Tyler Davis was masterful through eight innings and the seventh-ranked Huskies routed Utah (13-27, 3-17) 11-1 in a Pac-12 Conference game in Salt Lake City.

The win improved Davis’ record to 10-1, making him the Huskies’ 14th 10-game winner in team history and the first since Tim Lincecum in 2006.

Washington (31-11-1, 18-5) turned a close game into a laugher with nine runs in the final three innings. Trevor Mitsui led the Huskies offensively with three hits, two runs and an RBI.

• Treasure Valley (28-8, 19-5) swept CC Spokane (19-17, 11-13) in an NWAACC twinbill in Ontario, Ore.

The Chukars won the opener 5-4 despite the Sasqatuch’s late rally. CCS scored three runs in final two innings.

In the nightcap, Brady Baker hit an RBI double in the bottom of the 10th and Treasure Valley won 3-2.

Track and field

Washington State senior Mary Barnett and sophomore Dominique Keel won two events apiece to help the Cougar women edge Washington 82-81 in a dual meet at Mooberry Track in Pullman.

Barnett won the shot put with a toss of 45 feet, 7 inches and claimed the discus after reaching a distance of 139-11.

Keel claimed victories in the 100-meter dash (11.84 seconds) and the 200 (24.14). She was also a part of the Cougars’ winning 400 relay team.

The Washington men edged Washington State 84-79.

Men’s golf

Idaho cooled down during the second round of the Western Athletic Conference Championships at Stallion Mountain Golf Club in Las Vegas, but remains in second place.

The Vandals were two strokes off the lead after the first round, but couldn’t keep pace with New Mexico State during the second round. Idaho is at 4 under, 15 shots behind the leaders.

Idaho’s Jared du Toit followed up his first-round 70 with a 73 in the second round. He is in sixth place at 1 under. Ryan Porch is tied for seventh at even par and Rylee Iacolucci and Aaron Cockerill are tied for 11th at 1 over.

Softball

CC of Spokane (28-12, 22-4) swept Columbia Basin (14-22, 11-15) in an NWAACC doubleheader in Pasco 13-8 and 4-1.

• North Idaho (35-20, 30-16) swept Colorado Northwestern (8-45, 7-41) in a Scenic West Athletic Conference doubleheader in Coeur d’Alene 8-0 and 10-2.

Women’s rowing

Highlighted by a 20-second victory by its second varsity eight, Washington State captured the Winchell Cup for the fifth straight year, beating Oregon State at Wawawai Landing in Pullman.
