Coaches honor Gebbers

Wade Gebbers has received another regional honor following his senior season at Whitworth.

The 5-foot-11 guard from Brewster was named to the National Basketball Coaches Association of America All-West Region second team after collecting an All-West Region first-team honor from D3hoops.com last week.

Gebbers is the 23rd player in Whitworth history to score 1,000 points, finishing with 1,064. He averaged 11.5 points and 3.5 assists this season.

Tinkle coach of year

Montana’s Wayne Tinkle has been selected the Big Sky Conference men’s basketball Coach of the Year for a second straight season.

Tinkle, a Spokane native, led the Grizzlies to a 19-1 conference record as they repeated as regular-season champion. They are 25-6 with a second straight Big Sky tournament title heading into a second-round NCAA tournament game against Syracuse.

Softball

Julie Johnson slugged her third home run of the season and drove in five runs to lead Whitworth to a 13-0, five-inning victory over Puget Sound in Tacoma that completed a four-game Northwest Conference sweep of the Loggers.

After winning three games on Sunday, Whitworth (12-10, 9-7 NWC) broke open a tight game Monday with a six-run third inning aided by three UPS (0-16, 0-12) errors.

Sophomore Peyton McMahon had her first home run, a two-run shot, in a four-run fourth.

Taylor Gilbert pitched a one-hit shutout as the Pirates extended their shutout streak to 11 innings over three games against the Loggers.
