Obituary: Smawley, Carol (Frost)
Age 81
She was born in Spokane on March 12, 1931 to Earl and Ruth Parrish Frost.
She graduated from North Central High School in l949 and attended Washington State College majoring in Education.
She married Bob Smawley in 1950.
Following Bob’s graduation in 1952 they moved to Spokane.
They returned to Pullman in 1953 where she lived the rest of her life.
Their three daughters, Debra Deane, Laura Lynn and Susan Carol all graduated from Washington State.
Carol returned to college in 1979 and completed her Education degree.
She received her Masters Degree in Library Science in 1984.
She worked as a substitute teacher and was a WSU Librarian in Math, Owen, Holland and Terrell Libraries.
She retired in l996.
Carol was a dedicated volunteer and she was honored by many local organizations.
These include; Neill Library Advisory Board, Past President Council on Aging (Mobile Meals Treasurer), Parks and Recreation Commission, United Way Past President, Red Feather Award, Hospital Auxiliary, Past President, Coordinator of knitted caps for newborns, Camp Fire Girls Council/Leader (15 years), WSU AGD Sorority Council (40 years), Past President Chapter “S” PEO, Past President Franklin School PTA, a member of Presbyterian Church, Session Elder and Deacon, Wedding Coordinator and Pullman Walk of Fame recipient.
Her talents and interests include painting, knitting, stained-glass, quilting, sewing, reading, traveling, grandchildren’s activities, flower arrangements, lifelong friendships and community service.
Family members who preceded her in death include her parents, sister Barbara, brothers Jack and Elton, and infant daughter, Shannon Lee.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years Bob, daughters Debra (Richard Olsen-Las Vegas), Laura (Bill Sahlberg-Spokane), Susan (Kurt Waananen- Minneapolis, MN), along with many nieces and nephews.
She was adored by her 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
She will always be remembered and respected as one of Pullman’s most distinguished volunteers.
Carol/Mama/Momma/Nanny was greatly loved by all who knew her and will be dearly missed.
A memorial service will be held on March 29th, at 11:00AM at the Pullman Presbyterian Church.
