Classes and workshops

Avenue West Gallery Art Classes - Ink/Acrylic on Yupo Paper: Use limited material to bring about abstract and representational paintings (no experience required). Friday and Oct. 28, 1-3 p.m., $40 plus $8 for supplies. Oil and Acrylic Class: Participants should bring a subject to paint or use setups provided, and bring table easel, canvas, paints (at least three or four colors) and brushes (limited supplies will be furnished). Drawing Methods with Andrea Perry - For ages 8-12. Students learn a variety of drawing methods including use of charcoals, pencils, color, pastels, and composition. Art Workshops at the 1912 Center - Animals and Other Objects in Clay: Create your own animal or object from low fire clay and learn slab work, coil work, sculpture, relief work and etching on clay. Saturday, 9 a.m.-1 p.m., $26 plus $15/supplies. Creating Your Own Bonsai: Instructor Ken Roberts will transform a large plant into a Bonsai shape, wire, pot and answer questions in the first half of the workshop; participants shape their own trees in the second half. Greencastle Soap Classes - Beginning Soap Making: Hands-on class for ages 16 and older teaches the basics of cold process soap. Participants design their own fragrance and take home nearly 3 pounds of the soap they made. All equipment and supplies included. Wednesday, 6:30 p.m., $55 (prepaid registration required). Herbal Salve and Lip Balm Class: Learn to infuse oils and make a simple herbal salve as well as how to make an economical lip balm. Call for artists

Coeur d’Alene Public Library - The library is collecting quilts, knitting, crochet, weavings, spinning and other fiber and fabric arts for its annual November exhibit. Pieces must be handmade (machine quilting is acceptable) and delivered to the library, 702 E. Front Ave., by Oct. 28. National Lentil Festival - Seeking submissions for the 2012 commemorative poster. Artwork will be used for all festival merchandise and advertising for the 2012 event. Spokane Ag Expo 2012 Photography Contest - Photographers are asked to submit entries depicting “Agriculture in the Inland Northwest.” Submission deadline is Nov. 30.
