NORTH HILL – The Spokane Guilds’ School’s 16th annual Smiles teeth whitening fundraiser is going on through Nov. 30.

For $99, Spokane residents can visit participating dentists and have their teeth professionally whitened and help the Guilds’ School infants and toddlers with special needs.

Tea will benefit Inland NW Baby

SPOKANE VALLEY – Mary Mary Marketing will host a Peek-A-Boo tea to benefit Inland NW Baby on Oct. 15, from 2 to 4 p.m., at the Avenues Social and Corporate Event Center, 9320 E. Mission Ave.

The afternoon will include desserts, mimosas, a raffle and a silent auction. The tea will also include a presentation by Jesse Sheldon, the founder of Inland NW Baby.

Sheldon began the organization to provide basic items, such as diapers, new and gently used clothing and hygiene items, to area children in need.

Area marching bands to perform Saturday

ALBI STADIUM – The Sounds of Thunder, 2011 Pacific Northwest Marching Band Championships will be held Saturday at Joe Albi Stadium, 5000 W. Wellesley. Gates open at 10 a.m. and the first marching band will step off for preliminary competition at 11 a.m.

This year’s lineup includes West Valley, University, East Valley, Kennewick, Pasco, Richland, Cheney, Mt. Spokane, Central Valley and Mead high schools.

The finals competition will begin at 4 p.m.

Tickets are available at the box office and are $12.50 for adults, $10 for students and seniors, and free for children six and younger. The event is a fundraiser for the Spokane Thunder Drum and Bugle Corps.

Learn how to compost at Oct. 15 fair

WEST HILLS – The Spokane Master Composters/Recyclers will host the Compost Fair on Oct. 15 at John A. Finch Arboretum, 3404 W. Woodland Blvd.

The fair is part of the Fall Leaf Festival, beginning at 11 a.m. Participants will need to arrive by 1:30 p.m. to complete all of the activities by the end of the event at 2.

Attendees of the fair will learn how to turn leaves, garden debris and food scraps into compost. Additional fair booths will provide information on other materials that can be composted, types of bins to use and how to build and turn a pile. Applications available for SCLD board

SPOKANE COUNTY – Spokane County Commissioners are accepting applications for a position on the Spokane County Library District Board of Trustees. The position will be available Jan. 1, 2012.

The current position is held by Jacob Laete, who has served two five-year terms, the maximum allowed by law. He will retire at the end of 2011.

Try square dancing at free events

HILLYARD/SPOKANE VALLEY – The Spokane Area Council of Square Dancers will hold two introductory Square Dance Fun Parties. Both events include an ice cream social.
