Area roundup: CCS women win NWAACC soccer opener

Dee Dee Garbe (West Valley High) scored twice and added an assist Wednesday as Community Colleges of Spokane opened the NWAACC women’s soccer tournament with a 5-1 win over Edmonds (13-8-3) at Spokane Falls CC.

Nikki Caudill (U-Hi) added two goals, the first off a Garbe corner kick late in the first half that gave the Sasquatch (15-5) a 3-0 lead.

CCS advances to the quarterfinals against host Peninsula (15-2-3) at noon Saturday at Port Angeles, Wash.

• Washington State junior Brandi Vega was named to the All-Pac-12 Conference first team after scoring six goals, including three winners, and tying for the team lead with five assists.

WSU sophomore defender Rachael Doyle made the second team. Forward Jocelyn Jeffers received honorable mention and joined teammate Nicole Setterlund on the All-Freshman team.

• Whitworth senior Anisa Babar was named Northwest Conference Defender of the Year, one of eight Pirates honored by the conference.

Babar was a first-team choice last season and a second-team pick in 2009.

Whitworth junior midfielders Mackenzie Grow (Lewis and Clark High) and Kelsey Griswold made the NWC second team. Selected for honorable mention were: senior midfielders Allie Smith and Cory Druffel (Pullman), senior forward Sarah Berentson, senior goalkeeper Callie Bergstrom (Mt. Spokane High) and sophomore defender Jami Hegg (Mead High).

Puget Sound senior midfielder Abby Goss (University High) made the second team.

Linfield freshman midfielder Lindzee Baker (Mead) was honorable mention.

Volleyball

Kate Hart had 17 blocks, 12 kills and two aces as CC Spokane (32-5, 13-1) won the NWAACC East Division title with a 3-1 comeback win at Walla Walla (31-8, 11-3).

Joni Nagy added 20 assists an 15 digs for the Sasquatch, who will open the NWAACC tournament at Gresham, Ore., next Thursday at 9 a.m. against North No. 4 Whatcom.

Jasmine Vivas had 15 assists and two aces for CCS, which is on an 11-game winning streak.

• North Idaho College will face College of Central Florida at 9 a.m. PST next Thursday in the opening round of the NJCAA volleyball tournament in West Plains, Mo.

The Cardinals (22-9) are the seventh seed. Central Florida (41-7) is seeded 10th. All tournament matches will be available live online at www.njcaa.org/tv and www.psblive.com. Fifth-seeded Southern Idaho, which defeated NIC in the Region 18 title match after losing twice to the Cardinals during the regular season, opens against No. 12 Mineral Area College.
