Bjorklund sets mark

Two more scoring milestones were established Friday night during Greater Spokane League basketball.

University’s Angie Bjorklund became the single-season girls league record holder and Rogers’ Scotty Livengood moved up to third among GSL boys career scorers.

Bjorklund now has 387 points with five league games remaining, breaking by 15 the previous record of 363 set by ex-Central Valley and current Arizona State star Emily Westerberg in 2003.

Livengood has 998 league points which moved him past former Shadle Park player Brett Weisner. He’s still 289 behind Adam Morrison and trails Sean Mallon by 216.

Ferris stays unbeaten

The Ferris boys continued their impressive season with an easier-than-expected 72-49 win over second-place Shadle Park last Friday.

The Saxons are a perfect 14-0 and lead the league by three games with six remaining. They still must play at Gonzaga Prep (9-5) on Jan. 30. The Bullpups (9-5) are on a hot streak, winning four straight, the last three by an average of 30 points per game.

First place is all but locked up, but second place is suddenly up in the air. The Highlanders (11-3) play only one of their final six games at home and are at Gonzaga on Tuesday, 5:30 p.m. Mead (11-4) still faces both Shadle and Prep.

Central Valley (7-8) finally has Luke Clift in the lineup. Out all year due to injury, last year’s CV leading scorer played in the last two games. And the fifth-place Bears won both to move two games up in the four-team scramble for two remaining district playoff berths.

Lewis and Clark (5-9), U-Hi (5-10) and Rogers (4-11) are the others. While Livengood goes after 1,000 points, the Pirates begin a four-game series, including against the Tigers and Titans, to try and work their way back into things.

Where do girls stand?

In Greater Spokane League girls competition, Shadle Park (10-4) survived at Ferris 52-46 to take sole possession of fourth place, a game ahead of Gonzaga Prep (9-5), who the Highlanders play at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Prep.

Lewis and Clark (14-0), the Titans (13-2) and Mead (12-3) remain firm in the top three spots.

Wrestling showdowns

GSL wrestling may not be as strong as in years past, as the fourth-and fifth-place finishes of Central Valley and University at Saturday’s Dream Duals attest.

But it is no less competitive and this week will determine the league champion. On Wednesday East Valley is at Central Valley. Both teams have 8-0 league records and either could be undisputed champion. Thursday the Bears host University (7-1) in the Battle of the Bone, the Titans hoping to create a three-way tie. Both matches begin at 7 p.m.

EV finished second in the 3A portion of the Dream Duals and Reardan won the new B classification. Lakeside finished third in 1A. It was a rare absence from the finals for the Eagles.

A look around the area

The timing was right for West Valley’s girls when they moved into the Great Northern League. The Eagles are 7-6 overall and 5-2 at the league turn in third place.

WV won only 6 out of 64 games while in the Greater Spokane League. But better athleticism and experience, stable coaching, health and the new league have meant an improved outlook.

The Eagles boys (10-2, 7-0) are unbeaten, the only team with a winning overall record and have a two-game lead midway through the GNL season.

•Freeman’s boys (11-4, 4-1) upended Colfax (12-2, 4-1) and Chewelah (8-6, 3-2) to share the Northeast A League lead. Colfax’s three-time state champion girls (13-2, 5-0) easily defeated Freeman (12-3, 4-1) for sole possession of first.

•Northwest Christian boys (16-0, 12-0) and Liberty girls (15-1, 12-0) maintain two-game leads in their respective 2B Bi-County Leagues. Republic boys (17-1, 11-0) in 2B and Curlew girls (15-1, 10-0) in 1B continued to have the best Panorama records.

•Tekoa-Oakesdale boys (12-3, 8-0) have a two-game 1B Whitman County lead after Garfield-Palouse (12-4, 6-3) knocked off St. John- Endicott (7-8, 6-2). Defensively-minded Sprague-Harrington (15-1, 8-1) convincingly dropped one opponent, Colton (14-3, 7-2), from a share of the girls lead, 62-38. Four games remain, including a season-ending showdown, Feb. 3 at home against Tekoa-Oakesdale (10-4, 7-1).
