STANFORD, Calif. – The Stanford Cardinal are getting comfortable working the clutch.

The Washington Huskies are still stalling at inopportune times.

Anthony Goods scored 19 points and hit the tie-breaking free throws with 27.5 seconds to play as Stanford rallied for its 14th consecutive home victory over Washington, 78-77 Thursday night.

Lawrence Hill scored 18 points and converted a three-point play with 41 seconds left for the Cardinal (10-4, 2-2 Pac-10), who trailed for most of the second half before holding on in the tense final seconds. Robin Lopez scored a career-high 17 points and his 7-foot twin Brook had 12 for the Cardinal, with the brothers combining for seven blocked shots.

Neither team led by more than seven points in an entertaining game between two appropriately desperate teams. After strong preseasons, both clubs got off to slow starts in Pac-10 play with just one victory apiece, making the weekend key for both teams’ hopes of staying in the conference race.

Jon Brockman had 23 points and 10 rebounds, and Justin Dentmon scored 15 points for the Huskies (11-5, 1-4), who haven’t won at Maples Pavilion since 1993.

There were plenty of Huskies to blame for the final-minute failures: Quincy Pondexter missed a potential go-ahead free throw with 29 seconds left; Ryan Appleby committed a foolhardy foul that led to Goods’ free throws; Phil Nelson’s ill-advised pass was stolen with 16 seconds left; and Nelson then missed a 3-pointer right before the buzzer.
