Schmidt scores 13, Trojans beat Bulldogs

C.J. Schmidt scored 13 points Wednesday and the Post Falls Trojans girls returned to the court for the first time since Dec. 19 with a 63-35 Inland Empire League basketball victory over the Sandpoint Bulldogs at Post Falls.

Kandice McArthur chipped in 11 points while Jenny McVeigh scored all seven of her points during the decisive second quarter when Post Falls (10-3, 3-2) outscored Sandpoint (1-11, 0-5) 18-2.

“In non-league action, Fawn Story had 13 points and 14 rebounds but the Mullan Tigers (1-9) still dropped a 61-24 decision to the Coeur d’Alene JV at Mullan.

Boys basketball

Brandon Haas had 13 points and 13 rebounds and Malcolm Colbert added 10 points to lead the Post Falls Trojans to a 59-36 Inland Empire League victory over the Sandpoint Bulldogs at Post Falls.

Drake Hanson scored 12 points to lead Sandpoint (4-5, 0-2).

Post Falls (6-4, 1-1) outscored Sandpoint 38-11 in the second and third quarters.

“The Coeur d’Alene JV outscored the Mullan Tigers 30-11 in the second half to break a 17-all tie and claim a 47-28 non-league victory at Mullan. Randy Auger led Mullan (1-8) with nine points.

“Justin Aver made 11 of 18 field goals – 5 of 7 from 3-point range – and 12 of 15 free throws on his way to 39 points and Blackburn of Australia beat the Kettle Falls Bulldogs 77-62 at Kettle Falls.

Ryan Douse scored 12 points and Kody Hart 10 for Kettle Falls (2-6). Brian Strobel left the game early in the third quarter with a concussion and did not return.

Wrestling

Four consecutive pins helped the host Kellogg Wildcats to a 30-0 lead and they held on for a 39-30 Intermountain League win over the St. Maries Lumberjacks.

Women’s basketball

Margie Lou Correll’s jumper at the buzzer gave the Wenatchee Valley College Knights a come-from-behind, upset win over the Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch 50-49 at Wenatchee.

It was the NWAACC opener for both schools.

Michelle Short made 8 of 14 field goals and 10 of 12 free throws to score a game-high 26 points for WVC (6-10).

Shantel Haugen scored 15 points to lead Spokane (10-4). Ren Mallory had nine rebounds and four assists.

Wenatchee trailed by three at halftime.

Men’s basketball

Colby Wattling scored 18 points and had eight rebounds to lead the Wenatchee Valley College Knights (3-10, 1-0) to a 77-61 NWAACC victory over the Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch (7-9, 0-1).
