Pie in the Sky coming to Pavillion Park

Maggie Capwell Staff writer

LIBERTY LAKE – As part of the Eat Well Guided Tour of America, Liberty Lake will host the fancifully named Pie in the Sky Carnival as a chance for local pie enthusiasts to experience locally grown food through pie.

Pavillion Park is the site of the two-hour pie party, which will commence at 6 p.m. Aug. 13.

The carnival will be the tour’s only stop in Washington. It will make its way from Hollywood to New York by way of 15 states and multiple stops for sampling pie and other local foods.

This is not, however, simply a quest for the best pie, although that may be a tantalizing byproduct.

According to the tour’s Web site, its goal is to cross the country to “celebrate local, sustainable food and the folks who produce, distribute, promote, and eat it.” Stops on the trip will include restaurants, farmers’ markets, family farms and other places where locally grown, sustainable food can be found.

The Eat Well Tour is sponsored by Sustainable Table, an organization that seeks to educate consumers on food-related issues, to celebrate the consumer movement of shopping smarter and eating healthier, and to bring communities together through food.

The Pie in the Sky Carnival will feature a pie walk around a local band, a demonstration on the production of a pie crust, local vendors and more. Pies, ingredients for pies, and other treats will be available. Vendors include The Scoop, White Box Pies, Four Corners Bakery, Green Bluff Growers, and musician Stan Hall.

Representatives from local groups will be on hand to help people connect with locally grown food, as well as provide information from Sustainable Table and the Eat Well Tour. Representatives from Washington State University-Spokane County Extension’s Small Farm Program and Master Gardener Program will also be available to answer gardening questions and provide information about growing your own food or starting a farm.

Supporters of the event include WSU-Spokane County Extension, Slow Food Spokane River, Liberty Lake Farmers Market, Greenstone Corp., the city of Liberty Lake and Sustainable Table.
