Today’s special 9/11 events

•Tribute will be paid to Lt. Forrest Ewens, 2004 graduate of Whitworth College and member of Gonzaga University ROTC who was killed in Afghanistan in June. Speakers will include the Rev. Rick Ganz; noon today in the third-floor chapel, GU administration building.

•Spokane County Interstate Fair is dedicating today to honoring local armed forces members, firefighters and law officers. A Patriots Day parade will start at 5:30 p.m., leading through the fairgrounds to the grandstand, where a memorial service will start at 6. That’ll be followed at 6:45 by a Lee Greenwood concert for those with concert tickets.

•In remembrance of the attacks, the Spokane Police Honor Guard will present the colors and the Spokane police chaplain will give an invocation during the swearing-in of new police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick; 10 a.m. today at the Spokane Police Training Center, 2302 N. Waterworks.

•”Never Forget Sept. 11, 2001,” memorial event will be at 10 a.m. today in Sandpoint City Park near the Statue of Liberty. Idaho state Sen. Shawn Keough, R-Sandpoint, as well as fire, law enforcement and military personnel, VFW members and the Albeni Falls Pipes & Drums will take part.

•Post Falls American Legion Post 143 will mark the anniversary with a ceremony at 11 a.m. today in Q’emiln Park at the Lions Pavilion. Mayor Clay Larkin, local pastors, fire and police personnel and bagpipers will take part.

TV coverage

Many networks are planning special programs to commemorate 9/11, including CNN, which will use its “CNN Pipeline” broadband service (at www.cnn.com) to offer a free, real-time replay of the network’s coverage on Sept. 11, 2001, beginning at 5:30 a.m., minutes before the first plane hit New York’s World Trade Center.
