No homes threatened by fire near Kettle Falls

From Staff Reports The Spokesman-Review

A wildfire in the mountains west of Kettle Falls had burned 400 to 500 acres Sunday night, but no homes were threatened, fire officials said.

The Bisbee Mountain fire started Saturday and was still burning in steep terrain Sunday, said Bernie Jones, spokesman for the Department of Natural Resources.

Most of the land burning is state Fish and Wildlife or DNR property, he said.

While officials had been concerned about some nearby homes late Saturday, the fire stopped burning toward the homes Sunday.

About 300 firefighters arrived by Sunday night to help battle the blaze, which was considered uncontained.

But crews made progress in establishing a fire line, Jones said.

The fire appears to be human-caused, but Jones said he didn’t know other details Sunday night.
