Cougs win again

The Washington State women’s soccer team recorded its third win of the season Sunday with a 1-0 victory over Sacramento State in Pullman. Anna Miller scored the game-winning goal for the Cougars (3-2-1) late in the second half after her penalty kick was deflected back to her and she recovered the ball to bury the shot.

Miller managed five shots in the match while Carly Dobratz added four for the Cougars.

Freshman keeper Amber Wittmers got her first win as a Cougar, saving three shots in the contest.

•The Eastern Washington women salvaged a 1-1 tie with the Nevada Wolf Pack in Cheney.

The Eagles (1-4-1) got on the board first with a goal by Shelly Ikerd that was assisted by keeper Tiera Como. Como kicked the ball downfield on a goal kick and Nevada never gained possession, allowing for a rare assist by a keeper.

Nevada scored in the second half on a penalty kick to knot the score at 1 and neither team could score a goal in the two overtimes.

•The Gonzaga Bulldog women’s soccer team fell to Pacific 1-0 in the Four Points Sheraton Cats’ Classic in Tucson, Ariz., to lose consecutive matches for the first time since Sept. 9 and 11 of last year. The lone goal of the game was an unassisted goal by Pacific’s Laura King in the first half.

Freshman Taylor Hall led the Bulldogs (3-2-1) with four shots and Jamie Blanche registered two. Freshman keeper Jessie Thalman posted eight saves in the loss.

•The University of Idaho women’s soccer team suffered its sixth shutout loss of the season with a 3-0 loss to the University of San Diego. The Vandals (0-6-0) managed just three shots in the contest but all were on goal. San Diego finished with 17 shots.

•The North Idaho College women fell to Whitman 2-0 in Walla Walla. The Cardinals were out shot 19 to 7 in the loss.

Junior Hockey

The Spokane Braves defeated Golden 5-1 in Golden, B.C. Johnny Clark and Evan Witt each scored two goals for Spokane (1-1) which plays next Wednesday at Nelson.
