Whitworth will enshrine ‘60 football, Adams

The Spokesman-Review

One of the most successful teams and one of the most successful individuals in the annals of Whitworth College athletics will be inducted into the school’s Heritage Gallery Hall of Fame on Saturday at the school.

The 1960 Pirates football team, which went 9-1, losing only in the semifinals of the NAIA national playoffs, and Marv Adams, the fifth-leading basketball scorer in school history, comprise the Class of 2006.

Induction will take place at an 8:30 a.m. breakfast in the Hixon Union Building. The honorees will be introduced during halftime of the Pirates football game against Lewis & Clark that afternoon in the Pine Bowl.

For reservations, call 777-3224.

After a 9-0 regular season, the 1960 Pirates became the school’s first football team to qualify for the postseason. Whitworth was defeated 13-6 by Humboldt State, but finished the year ranked fourth in the nation.

Coach Sam Adams; quarterback Dennis Spurlock, who led the nation in passing; and John Murio, who finished third in the nation in receiving despite missing the last three games with an ankle injury, and four teammates were previously inducted as individuals.

Spurlock was a second-team Associated Press college-division All-American; Murio was a second-team NAIA All-American, and offensive tackle Tom Black, also the place-kicker, was a first-team NAIA All-American. Black, Norm Harding, Fred Shaffer and Ken Sugarman are the others in the school’s hall of fame.

Marv Adams, from Rogers High School, scored 1,457 points and averaged 17.8 points in three varsity seasons, helping the Pirates compile a 56-26 overall record. A three-time All-Evergreen Conference selection, he led the league in scoring as a junior (19.0) and averaged 23.3 points as a senior, the third-highest average in school history.

The 1954-55 Pirates won the league and advanced to the NAIA national tournament in Kansas City, Mo.

After graduation, Adams played AAU basketball in the Seattle-Tacoma area. His long career in education included being superintendent in Mount Vernon, Wash., and Santa Rosa, Calif. He retired in 1995.

Their induction will bring to 58 the number of individuals and six teams in the Crimson Club-sponsored shrine since its inception in 1990.
