Gatlin works out for Texans

Associated Press The Spokesman-Review

Track star Justin Gatlin worked out Tuesday for the Houston Texans, but coach Gary Kubiak said signing him was “not something we would do right now.”

Gatlin, an Olympic gold medalist and co-world record holder in the 100 meters, tested positive for testosterone and other steroids in April.

Kubiak said Gatlin, who last played football in high school, had worked out for several teams over the last month. The Texans worked him out as a receiver and Kubiak said team officials told him he was “very impressive.”

At 6-foot-1 and 180 pounds, the 24-year-old has the size to be an NFL receiver.

League fines Vick

Michael Vick was fined $10,000 by the NFL and agreed to donate another $10,000 to charity for an obscene hand gesture toward Atlanta fans following last weekend’s loss to New Orleans.

“I broke a rule and now I’m paying the price,” Vick said. “The good thing is I get to donate a portion of it to charity.”

Former agent files lawsuit

A former sports agent who was decertified by the NFL Players Association has filed a $36 million lawsuit, saying he was punished for his frequent criticism of the union.

Steve Weinberg represented 42 NFL players when he was decertified by the union in 2003. He had been a practicing agent in the NFL for 22 years.

The players union took away his license because he was “an outspoken critic of the NFL Players Association, their leadership and the lackadaisical manner in which they followed and enforced their own regulations,” said Larry Friedman, Weinberg’s lawyer.
